Federal immigration officials gave separate tours for media, local governments, consular officials andimmigrant advocates on Thursday to show what residents will be afforded once they pass through the 15-foot gate to temporarily live behind high concrete walls. KRGV reports that a refurbished detention center in Karnes City, TX, will be used to house hundreds of women and children who crossed into Texas illegally. The center’s rooms, called “suites,” have only been used to house adult illegal aliens in the past, but with the recent surge of unaccompanied minors from Central America, it will now be used to house kids too. MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- More than 200 Haitians -- including many children -- jumped from a 50-foot wooden boat near Key Biscayne Tuesday afternoon, swimming to shore and swarming the highway leading into Miami. Video from local news outlets showed people jumping into the water and swimming or wading to the beach. The Coast Guard said the boat ran aground. Immigration is a complex problem. So is the long-term question of how the United States should handle the influx of tens of thousands of children from Central America. A local home for children has been asked by the federal government to prepare itself to take in unaccompanied immigrant children from Central America who continue to cross over into the United States.
