[Snip] In New York City, ICE arrested 156 non-criminal illegal immigrants, more than double the amount for the same period last year. SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Fears of deportation have placed a cloud over a Sacramento church. The Del Paso church La Vida serves as a sanctuary for the local Hispanic community. Federal immigration agents were caught staking out at the church during services. But Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have a policy to avoid sensitive places, including houses of worship. Pastor Alex Vaiz’s Sacramento church is a safe place for people from all walks of life. “A good number of our church are immigrants,” said he said. But Vaiz says that sanctuary is now threatened, after federal immigration agents staked out across...

Federal investigators are using a device designed for counterterrorism to locate undocumented immigrants, The Detroit News reported Thursday. The device, which is known as a Hailstorm or Stingray, simulates a cell tower and fools nearby phones into providing location data. It can also interrupt cellular service in the targeted area. The newspaper obtained an unsealed federal search warrant affidavit documenting the use of device. Authorities were trying to find Rudy Carcamo-Carranza, 23, a twice-deported restaurant worker from El Salvador who had been accused in drunk-driving and hit-and-run cases.

Stays of removal are frequently issued to aliens otherwise slated for deportation when members of Congress introduce “private bills” to individually grant those aliens permanent legal status. While these bills rarely come to a vote and are even more rarely passed, ICE previously granted aliens stays of removal as a matter of course, while the bills are formally under consideration — a policy that can allow otherwise removable persons to remain in the United States for months if not years. ...

Glacier flow at the southern Antarctic Peninsula has increased since the 1990s, but a new study has found the change to be only a third of what was recently reported. An international team of researchers, led by the UK Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling at the University of Leeds, is the first to map the change in ice speed. The team collated measurements recorded by five different satellites to track changes in the speed of more than 30 glaciers since 1992. The findings, published today in Geophysical Research Letters, represent the first detailed assessment of changing glacier flow in...

But, there are elected officials and law enforcement officers in the state who strongly oppose these policies and, in particular, Senate Bill 54 , which would prohibit law enforcement agencies in the state from using "agency or department moneys,...
