Three years ago today, I wept for my friend Chavez and myself, for the people of Venezuela and the world. In 2006, shortly after my first peace camp in Crawford, Texas to confront the person who I felt murdered my son Casey: George Bush, I was invited to Caracas, Venezuela to attend the World Social Forum. Amazingly, at the time I really had no idea that the World Social Forum was about socialism, and I really didn't know much more about President Hugo Chavez other than that he was a very vocal opponent of my opponents: George Bush and the U.S....

After a black protestor was sucker-punched by a white Donald Trump supporter while leaving a rally on Thursday (March 10), Chris Brown took to Instagram to vent his frustration with the scene publicly. "(EXPLETIVE) TRUMP AND (EXPLETIVE) THE PIGS," he wrote with a selfie video, speaking into the camera, saying that if this is the way things are going to proceed at rallies, black people should attend the rallies in groups of 40 or 50. "See what they do then," he said. "Keep touching us." In his comment, Brown called seeing people act this way is "evil" and said God...

Washington Press Club Foundation's 72nd annual Congressional Dinner: "As great as it is being Speaker, there is a lot of stake this November. And I think the best thing for me to do right now is to confirm that those rumors out there are actually true. People (many) have approached me about seeking a higher office. It's not a job that I ever sought. (but) This is a very dire moment, and if there's a way I can be a unifying figure, bring some needed stability and protect an institution that means so much to our country, then I am...

Let's take a page from Donald Trump's book and ignore political correctness for a moment: If you support Trump, you support his sexist, bigoted and racist views. There are no ifs, ands or buts about it. And this is especially true for GOP party leaders, elected officials and even community leaders. Some have said things such as, "I don't like Trump's history of demeaning women, but I think he will be good for the economy." Sorry, you don't get a pass because you like one of his policy proposals. It's akin to saying, "I supported Hitler for his tax plan."...

Trump's rise proves we're full of loud, illiterate and credulous people -- and he's a mirror of them "I love the poorly educated." -- Donald Trump Before any votes were cast, when Donald Trump was the theoretical front-runner, the optimists preached patience. Just wait, they said. This will blow over. He's a clown, a huckster, a TV personality. There's no way he can win. It's just not possible. Well, it's not only possible - it's likely. Trump won again in Nevada on Tuesday night, by a massive margin, and he may well sweep the Super Tuesday states. If that happens,...

Beyoncé didn't bring back the Black Panthers when she and an Afro-frizzed dance team donned black leather jackets and berets during Super Bowl 50's halftime show. That's because the Black Panthers never actually left. The Panthers were more than militants; they were pioneers in American pop and political culture. The Black Lives Matter movement, the rise of social media, music and sports, even Donald Trump -- all were shaped by the Panthers in some way, historians and ex-Panthers say. On the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Black Panther Party, people are taking a second look at the group....

1. It does not matter if you were on birth control, if you forgot just this once, or if you didn’t think at all. It does not matter if it was your husband, your boyfriend, or someone who was really working those olive corduroy pants. You are pregnant. And you are the one that is freaking the f*** out. 2. Tell someone else who will support you. Tell a friend, a family member, post it on Reddit, or whisper it to your cat, Miss Poke. Know you are not alone in this. 3. Google is your best friend and worst...

Prisoners were outraged at the discovery of mouse droppings in their breakfast forcing officers to change the menu. Unions representing prison workers reported on Monday that mouse excrement had been discovered on breakfast rolls served to inmates over the weekend at the Albolote penitentiary in the province of Granada. One union, CCOO, said that prison workers decided to take the rolls off the menu "in order to avoid health problems that may arise from consuming them and because protests from inmates will result in regimental incidents." CCOO added that the finding of rodent droppings signaled that the prison did not...

American presidential politics are often hugely entertaining. They can at times be equally demoralizing. This year's primary contests are certainly no exception. Speaking of this primary season, The Economist opined that "it has rarely been so ugly, uncertain or strange." What makes it so is the relative success enjoyed by candidates on the far right or far left of their parties -- Donald Trump and Ted Cruz for the Republicans and Bernie Sanders for the Democrats. This seems to belie the old nostrum that the presidency is won from the centre. It also seems to ignore a couple of important...

Black poverty is fundamentally distinct from white poverty--and so cannot be addressed without grappling with racism. There have been a number of useful entries in the weeks since Senator Bernie Sanders declared himself against reparations. Perhaps the most clarifying comes from Cedric Johnson in a piece entitled, "An Open Letter To Ta-Nehisi Coates And The Liberals Who Love Him." Johnson's essay offers those of us interested in the problem of white supremacy and the question of economic class the chance to tease out how, and where, these two problems intersect. In Johnson's rendition, racism, in and of itself, holds limited...

An attorney representing a biker arrested in the May 17 Twin Peaks shootout is seeking to move his client's felony case from McLennan County. Dallas attorney Clint Broden, who represents Hewitt resident Matthew Clendennen, filed a change of venue motion Friday that seeks to try the case in another county because of what he describes as "pervasive, prejudicial and inflammatory" publicity about the unique case. The motion asks 54th State District Judge Matt Johnson to move the trial to Travis, Dallas or Harris counties. Broden's motion cites quotes attributed in the local media to McLennan County District Attorney Abel Reyna,...
