A Florida man is suing a hospital after his amputated leg was found in the trash. According to the Miami Herald, the Key Largo man went to Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables to have his leg amputated below his knee. The hospital then threw the leg away instead of incinerating it, which is the normal practice. The man found out about the incident when homicide detectives knocked on his door and asked him why his leg was found at a waste management facility with the man's name tag still attached. Hospital officials have not explained how the mistake was made....

The Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon, a Labor Day television tradition for decades, is ending. MDA said Friday that “the new realities of television viewing and philanthropic giving” make it the right time to end the annual event, memorably hosted for most of its life by Jerry Lewis. Celebrities including Frank Sinatra, John Lennon and Michael Jackson to Pitbull and Jennifer Lopez have performed on the telethon, first hosted by Lewis and Dean Martin in 1956. It moved to Labor Day in 1966. The telethon ran 21 and a half hours in 2010, Lewis’ last year as host, and had dwindled...

Something was wrong with Yamini Karanam. The PhD student had moved from Hyderabad, India, to Indiana to study computer science. But her new life in America was amiss. Once a brilliant student, she now had trouble understanding simple articles. Friends and colleagues would say things to her, only for the sentences to get mixed up in her mind. Because that’s where Karanam’s problem lay: deep within her brain. She went on holiday last fall but returned even more exhausted than when she left. Karanam slept for two weeks straight, missing school. “Then came the headaches. Slips and misses at work...

With his “aw shucks, ma’am” charm and velvety voice, Glen Campbell was a legendary country and pop-music singer, guitarist and Hollywood hot guy. But now, friends and relatives tell me, he languishes in a “mediocre” facility outside Nashville, Tenn., for patients afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease. He can spend only minimal time with his oldest children, say sources, who claim he is frequently alone except for the company of caregivers and TV crews recording his mental decline. He wants to go home, they say, and doesn’t understand that the facility is his residence, probably for the rest of his life.

Some people protest police brutality in ways that only remind us of why we need police. That’s how I feel about the Baltimore rioters who some news reports described as “protestors [SIC].” The label falsely flatters the thugs and hooligans who set fires and attacked police, merchants and journalists after the otherwise respectful funeral on Monday for Freddie Gray, 25, who died under mysterious circumstances in police custody.

During the hearing, Health Care Subcommittee Chairman Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) shared an example from his state as to the effects of the tax: "I’ve had the opportunity to visit a lot of medical device companies, and I plead with them to show me their books.
