Police fired tear gas at an angry crowd fighting over food supplies in Sierra Leone on Saturday, while other residents defied a three-day national lockdown that the government hopes will accelerate the end of the Ebola epidemic. Sierra Leone has reported nearly 12,000 cases and more than 3,000 deaths since the worst Ebola epidemic in history was detected in neighboring Guinea a year ago. New cases have fallen sharply since a peak of more than 500 a week in December but the government says the lockdown, its second, is necessary to identify the last cases and to buck a worrying...

Rhythm isn't something most babies are born with. But this one - which is yet to be born - seems to have it in abundance. In this incredible video of an ultrasound scan, the 14-week-old foetus appears to clap its hands together, as the mother sings If You're Happy And You Know It Clap Your Hands. The parents can be heard laughing in the background as the doctor then rewinds the tape to make it look like that baby was clapping along to their singing. The 15-second video that was uploaded to YouTube yesterday by Jen Cardinal, who is based...

Apple has explored presenting iPhone users with non-dismissable notifications, such as requiring personal health data to be entered before resuming normal use of their device, in a concept that could help break bad habits. The details were revealed in a newly published Apple patent application, discovered on Thursday by AppleInsider. Entitled "Notifications with Input-Based Completion," the filing describes prompts on an iPhone that would actively block access to using the device until certain data is entered. The most prominent examples given by Apple in the filing are health-related. For example, screenshots show the user being prompted to check their weight...

With long hours behind the wheel and fast-food rest-stop meals, long-haul truck driving is one of the unhealthiest professions in the U.S. One man is trying to change that.In the winter, Siphiwe Baleka gets some strange looks as he bikes to work over the icy, snow-laden streets of Springfield, Missouri. He fishtails around corners and does his best to avoid cars—twice he’s been hit, and both times he’s walked away. At the headquarters of Prime Inc., a long-haul trucking operation with thousands of big rigs across the country, Baleka is an oddity rolling into work on his human-powered machine. “People...

She told police her brother and uncle strangled her but later she dropped the caseAn Egyptian woman who was believed to have been killed by her brother and uncle woke up in the grave and went straight to the police. Once her brother and uncle were arrested, she went to the prosecutor and dropped the case, saying she tried to commit a suicide. Police arrested the two men after witnesses said they saw them taking the 30-year-old woman to the nearby cemetery in Minya town, nearly 250 km south of the capital Cairo. “At first she said they strangled her...

Over 120 residents in Kazakhstan's Kalachi village have been diagnosed with a strange sleeping sickness where people suddenly fall into a coma-like sleep without warning. The residents then don't wake up for days and when they do, experience severe medical symptoms, the likes of which include memory loss, dizziness, blinding headaches and nausea. The sleep inducing malady has so far affected over one fourth of the village population with many residents experiencing repeated attacks. The government of Kazakhstan combined with the help of scientists have been scrambling to find the reason behind the illness. While they are pursuing some strong...

CNN: Germanwings co-pilot Andreas Lubitz declared unfit to work, officials say "Germanwings co-pilot Andreas Lubitz was hiding an illness from his employers and had been declared unfit to work by a doctor, according to German authorities investigating what could have prompted the seemingly competent and stable pilot to steer his jetliner into a French mountain. Investigators found a letter saying that Lubitz, 27, wasn't fit to do his job in the waste bin of his Dusseldorf, Germany, apartment, city prosecutor Christoph Kumpa said Friday. The note, Kumpa said, had been "slashed."

A major publisher of scholarly medical and science articles has retracted 43 papers because of “fabricated” peer reviews amid signs of a broader fake peer review racket affecting many more publications. The publisher is BioMed Central, based in the United Kingdom, which puts out 277 peer-reviewed journals. A partial list of the retracted articles suggests most of them were written by scholars at universities in China, including China Medical University, Sichuan University, Shandong University and Jiaotong University Medical School. But Jigisha Patel, associate editorial director for research integrity at BioMed Central, said it’s not “a China problem. We get a...

Since December, Scott County has had 72 confirmed HIV cases and seven preliminary ones. Officials fear potentially up to 100 cases could be identified. In past years, Scott County reported less than five new HIV cases each year and had just 21 residents with HIV in 2014, according to state statistics.

Who determines a presidents competency or otherwise ‘incapacity’. Could congress instigate a special form of impeachment not meant to remove from office, but force him for a psychiatric evaluation and drug testing? Then a real impeachment is an option for removal? Wouldn’t that stick to his underwear and make him feel uncomfortable.

U.S. Capitol police on Wednesday arrested seven pro-life protesters while they were praying outside the office of House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio). Those arrested, who included prominent pro-life activist and nurse Jill Stanek, were protesting the House Republican leaderships’ failure to call a vote on the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which would prohibit aborting an unborn child in or after the 20th week of gestation. The House Republican leadership shelved the bill less than 24 hours before it was set to come up for a vote on Jan. 22 after some Republican congresswomen, led by Rep. Renée Ellmers (R-N.C.)...

It is safe to say that most politicians these days could be diagnosed with a range of mental conditions, and many would likely be labeled sociopaths or psychopaths. The terms psychopath and sociopath are often used interchangeably, even by mental health professionals. The symptoms are somewhat consistent between the two: lack of conscience, no moral compass, manipulative, low range of emotions, interpersonally insensitive. The psychopath is deadly. He is well spoken, charismatic, fearless, controlling, socially potent, a habitual liar, calm to a disturbing degree in the face of chaos and cold hearted. He is a master at blaming others. David...

A new report says that the federal government plans to keep track of how healthy children are by weighing and measuring them in daycare. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will weigh and check the height of roughly 3,000 children as part of a study mandated by First Lady Michelle Obama’s Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act. According to a report by Free Beacon, the USDA published “a notice in the Federal Register on Friday proposing data collection on what meals are served in professional and home daycare facilities and how much physical activity children perform.” …

MANY people have been making the case that Americans have grown fat because they eat too much starch and sugar, and not enough meat, fat and eggs. Recently, the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee lifted recommendations that consumption of dietary cholesterol should be restricted, citing research that dietary cholesterol does not have a major effect on blood cholesterol levels. The predictable headlines followed: “Back to Eggs and Bacon?” But, alas, bacon and egg yolks are not health foods. Although people have been told for decades to eat less meat and fat, Americans actually consumed 67 percent more added fat, 39 percent...

As Americans have become more aware over the years of nutrition-related health issues, salt has emerged as a major villain in many people’s minds. So much so that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describes reducing the U.S. population’s consumption of sodium as “a national priority.” The CDC warns that too much salt can raise people’s blood pressure, putting them at greater risk for heart disease and stroke, among other evils. But some skeptics believe the threat posed by salt is overblown. Indeed, some say too broad a drive against salt poses its own health risks. Arguing in favor...
