The No. 2 official at the Homeland Security Department meddled in three high-profile immigration cases, giving special treatment to applications from wealthy and well-connected immigrants after calls from major Democrats despite the objections of career employees, the department’s inspector general concluded in a report Tuesday. Alejandro Mayorkas, who was elevated from head of the department’s legal immigration agency to be deputy secretary while the investigation was ongoing, also angered many of his colleagues by getting involved in the cases, and “created an appearance of favoritism and special access” for the wealthy immigrants, the inspector general concluded. Inspector General John Roth...

The Chicago Tribune’s editorial board implored President Donald Trump Tuesday to clean up the nuclear waste storage debacle left by former President Barack Obama. Obama helped former Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid to derail plans to store nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Without Yucca, nuclear power plants don’t have a permanent location to store spent fuel and left the federal government with $50 billion in legal liabilities. “Many people in Nevada didn’t want the waste, no matter how safe or isolated the storage facility may be,” the editorial board wrote. “It was the ultimate NIMBY [Not In My Backyard]...

SCOTUS filibuster vaporized as Mitch McConnell holds firm on cloture rule change Wow. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) actually did the right thing for a change. He led the way as Senate Republicans invoked the so-called nuclear option today, voting 52 to 48 on a party-line vote to eliminate the filibuster for nominations to the Supreme Court. Going forward, high court nominees including President Trump’s current pick Neil Gorsuch, will need a simple majority to be confirmed.

Outgoing Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said he is confident that he has laid the groundwork for Democrats to nuke the filibuster for Supreme Court nominees if they win back the Senate in November. Envisioning Hillary Clinton in the White House and Democrats controlling the Senate, Reid warned that if a Senate Republican minority block her Supreme Court nominee, he is confident the party won't hesitate to change the filibuster rules again. Such a move would be an extension of what Reid did in 2013 when he was still majority leader, eliminating filibusters (with a simple majority vote) on...

Harry Reid — in a 1993 speech on the Senate floor — insinuated the United States was insane for providing a pathway for illegal immigrants to obtain citizenship. In his speech, the former Nevada senator hypothetically posed that “if making it easy to be an illegal alien isn’t easy enough, how about offering a reward for being an illegal immigrant?” “No sane country would do that, right?” he continued. “Guess again.” “If you break our laws by entering this country without permission and give birth to a child, we reward that child with citizenship and guarantee a full access to...

The truth is being revealed, as we all prayed that it would. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Agent Daniel P. Love has been breaking the law for years. Using and abusing his authority to run his own personal fiefdom. Bullying citizens until they commit suicide. All while believing he was above the law. Or so a report released last month seems to indicate. ... On February 14th, a letter from U.S. Reps. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, and Blake Farenthold, R-Texas, named Daniel P. Love and questions an investigation that points to the deletion of hundreds of documents the day before a...

SALT LAKE CITY — The Interior Department's Office of Inspector General investigated an unnamed Bureau of Land Management supervisory agent in Salt Lake City for more than a year on ethics complaints, with the independent panel concluding that breaches had occurred. The agent, which the Deseret News has confirmed is Dan Love through a source familiar with the investigation, is accused of using his position to secure preferential treatment for his family during the 2015 Burning Man event in Nevada, including using federal law enforcement officers as personal escorts for their safety, using his BLM vehicle to transport his girlfriend...

Did Joe Manchin just open the door for Republicans to invoke the nuclear option if necessary to confirm Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court? In appearances on CNN and MSNBC this morning, Dem Senator Manchin blasted his fellow Dems for having invoked the nuclear option in the first place. Said Manchin on Morning Joe: “I’ve been opposed to the nuclear option. I thought Harry Reid was dead wrong when he did it. I voted against that. My dear beloved senator, prior to my coming here, was Robert C. Byrd and he would be rolling over in his grave knowing what...

The American Civil Liberties Union announced Saturday evening that a federal court in New York had issued an emergency stay on President Trump’s executive order banning immigration from seven predominantly Muslim countries. The court’s decision, which will affect people who have been detained in airports, came after the ACLU and other activist groups filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of two Iraqis who were held at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York as a result of the order. “I hope Trump enjoys losing. He’s going to lose so much we’re going to get sick and tired of...

A convicted felon and key prosecution witness in the criminal case against former Utah Attorney General John Swallow threw out some big names in state and national politics during a court hearing Tuesday. And Swallow’s one-time co-defendant who prosecutors still consider a “co-conspirator,” former Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, made an unexpected appearance in the courtroom. Marc Jenson testified at an evidentiary hearing that Utah House Speaker Greg Hughes, R-Draper, and then U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, attended a “secret” meeting involving the Utah Transit Authority in his Southern California office in 2009. Hughes was a legislator but...
