The Canadian federal government has already banned unvaccinated people from domestic or international air or train travel, a rule that went into effect Nov. 30. Facebook banned news and videos of protests of the development, saying it was misinformation. Those videos showed up on Tik Tok, however. Politifact, owned by the nonprofit Poynter Institute, disputes the assertion that people are being prevented from buying groceries in New Brunswick. But Must Read Alaska’s Fact Check Desk found the New Brunswick government document that allows stores to discriminate against those who haven’t taken the shot. To date, one of the two major...

Connecticut State Police are trying to track down a bold set of shoplifters who stole $1,600 in items from a grocery store as angry bystanders looked on, video shows. The footage — shared thousands of times on Facebook — shows four masked suspects in dark clothing loading shopping carts packed with items like laundry detergent into two waiting cars outside Market 32 in Oxford early Tuesday. “Look at all that,” one witness says in the clip as the thieves shamelessly stock up without paying. “That’s why prices go up, because of these a–holes … can’t get a job like the...

The price of some of America’s favorite foods, including burgers and hot dogs, are set to soar — as annual inflation hit a 30-year high in October, the feds announced Wednesday. Major US food companies, including Tyson Foods, Conagra and Kraft Heinz, are reportedly preparing to hike prices on some of their meat products to offset higher supplier costs, according to supplier letters to wholesale customers that were obtained by CNN. Ball Park hot dogs and burgers, State Fair corn dogs, Jimmy Dean frozen breakfast items, Hillshire Farm sausage and lunch meat, and Hebrew National and Oscar Mayer hot dogs...
  • VANITY: Are We On The Verge of Serous Long-Term Grocery Shortages?

Mrs. Chandler received a panicky email from her conspiracy-minded friend. Her friend said that Fox News told her we are going to experience devastating supermarket shortages lasting for two years. I suspect that this could be Fox News creating fear to attract viewers. I am now being pressured to purchase a crapload of non-perishables.
  • When Boris Yeltsin went grocery shopping in Clear Lake (Texas, 1989)

09/16/1989 - Boris Yeltsin and a handful of Soviet companions made an unscheduled 20-minute visit to a Randall's Supermarket after touring the Johnson Space Center. Between trying free samples of cheese and produce and staring at the meat selections, Yeltsin roamed the aisles of Randall's nodding his head in amazement. A post earlier this year on Houston’s Reddit that mentioned late Russian president Boris Yeltsin’s wide-eyed trip to a Clear Lake grocery store led to a trip to the Houston Chronicle archives, where a batch of photos of the leader were found. It was September 16, 1989 and Yeltsin, then...

The alleged gunman charged with slaughtering 10 people at a Colorado supermarket bought an assault rifle a week prior to the shooting — and was caught “playing” with it by a family member, according to new court documents. Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa purchased a Ruger AR-556 pistol on March 16 — six days before going on a deadly rampage at the King Soopers in Boulder, according to an affidavit unsealed Tuesday. His sister-in-law, whose name is redacted, told investigators that she saw Alissa, 21, “playing with a gun she thought looked like a ‘machine gun'” in the days prior to...

Average pay for restaurant and grocery workers rose above $15 an hour for the first time, according to Labor Department data reviewed by The Washington Post. The Labor Department reported that in June, the most recent month where data is available, non-managerial restaurant workers earned an average of $15.31 an hour, which is a more than 10 percent increase from the $13.86 hourly wage workers were taking home before the pandemic, the Post noted. Grocery store workers took home on average $15.04 an hour in June, which was up seven percent from when the pandemic began.
  • Global Food Shortages Are Becoming Very Real, And U.S. Grocery Store Chains Are Preparing For Worst Case Scenarios

The head of the UN World Food Program repeatedly warned us that we would soon be facing “famines of biblical proportions”, and his predictions are now starting to become a reality. We have already seen food riots in some parts of Africa, and it isn’t too much of a surprise that certain portions of Asia are really hurting right now. But I have to admit that I was kind of shocked when I came across an article about the “hunger crisis” that has erupted in Latin America. According to Bloomberg, “a resurgence of poverty is bringing a vicious wave of...

I own a grocery store in Northern Michigan. Or I did until today. 80% of my staff just quit because the CARES Act pays them more for sitting at home than to come into work. I pay them on average $600-700 per week. The CARES ACT will give them 80% of that (regular Michigan unemployment 480-560) plus an additional $600 through the cares act. So $1100 to sit at home or $600 to come to work. But if they quit they don't get unemployment right? Wrong the CARES ACT says if the employee is uncomfortable working because of the Covid-virus...

As we head in to the peak of the coronavirus pandemic in North Carolina, social distancing has become absolutely necessary to reduce exposure for everyone. Many stores that are still open have started announcing new measures this week for tightening social distancing requirements. Harris Teeter has announced that they will be implementing customer capacity limits at all stores to further protect associates and shoppers. According to their press release, "Beginning April 8, Harris Teeter will limit the number of customers to 50% of building code capacity to further support physical distancing in its stores. Store associates will monitor the number...

I stopped in at the Draeger's Supermarket in Menlo Park this afternoon and there was an armed private security guard stationed outside the store with a bullet proof vest on and a hefty sidearm in his holster. I asked him why he was stationed there and he replied that there has been an increase of people hitting stores up to the new $950 misdemeanor/felony limit. He also told of a large gang that hit a grocery store in Mexico City (story below). He said that the police were outnumbered and stood down. It was a bit of shock seeing an...
  • Is It Safe For Older People To Shop During Senior Hours At Grocery Stores?

Supermarkets across the U.S. are launching seniors-only shopping hours for older people looking to avoid larger crowds during the coronavirus pandemic. But some public health experts are split on whether the benefits outweigh the risks. A few big chains, including Whole Foods and Stop & Shop, as well as some mom-and-pop stores, announced this week that they are blocking off the first hour or two of the business day for only people 60 or older to shop. The special hours afford seniors, one of the populations most vulnerable to the coronavirus, a chance to navigate a store thatÂ’s hopefully been...

I just got back from trying to get some common items I need in my refrigerator: carrots, Lactaid milk, and Stok unsweetened coffee. Now I feel very depressed and apprehensive for what's gonna be coming up in the next few weeks. Went to BJs, as they have great prices on all of the above. I walked into a near-empty store--and immediately the theme music from "The Twilight Zone" started playing. Vegetables--pretty wiped out, and NO carrots. Milk--NO milk of any kind, except goat milk. Guys, you can have my portion of the goat milk! I bought some Silk Almond Milk...
  • The Retail Supply Chain Has Inverted – Formerly Efficient Operations Now Least Effective – Small Markets Best

CTH is spending time on this issue because the food distribution sector is the most important sector in all commerce. Having some familiarity with the supply chain might help people to understand the challenges; and possibly help you locate product. The Inversion – Big chain markets; those who spent millions developing their own proprietary ‘just-in-time’ distribution networks and automated ordering systems; are currently the least equipped to deal with the level of demand.  Meanwhile smaller chains, or mom-and-pops, who rely on third-party brokered distribution are faster to respond.Several factors have increased retail market demand for food products and non-perishables.  People stocking...

BERLIN - Strict new controls to slow the spread of the coronavirus froze traffic at global borders Tuesday, idling trucks in columns more than 30 miles long at some European crossings, while masked security officers turned back travelers at others. The moves by officials bent on protecting their citizens raised new questions about how to maintain supplies of food, medical equipment and other goods in coming weeks that will be critical to nations in lockdown. Word of the border closings fanned growing fears in Europe, prompting widespread hoarding. “There is enough for everybody,” German Agriculture Minister Julia Kloeckner said, castigating...

Holy moley! I have a bit of a cold or something. I am out of Kleenex for my constantly runny nose (yeah, I know *yech* TMI -- but it is important to the story). I always get up early, so I ran to the nearby Ralphs which purpotes to be open 24 hrs. I encounter a hand-written sign "open from 8 AM to 8 PM." Well, dangit! OK, I go back at 8 AM. There is a HUGE LINE to get in!! There was a clerk at the door managing the line so she says I have to wait until...

Amazon has opened its first-ever full-size, "cashierless" grocery store, providing shoppers an experience that does not require any human interaction. The project, called Amazon Go Grocery, has been in development for five years. Starting Tuesday, customers can scan a QR code from Amazon's mobile app, walk into the Seattle store, take any item they want to purchase and walk out without paying at a cashier station. Amazon said it is employing technology that senses when a product is taken from or returned to a shelf and keeps track of items in a virtual cart. When a customer leaves, they are...

Family Fresh Market closed its doors at the Farmington, Minnesota, location for the final time Thursday afternoon. In November, the store's parent company announced it was pulling out of Farmington, a city south of the Twin Cities with a population of more than 21,000 people. It was the only grocery store in town. As the staple shuttered, community partners rushed to find ways to fill the gap to help thousands of vulnerable residents. "It's a public health crisis," said Farmington City Council member Joshua Hoyt. "We literally have residents who don't have immediate access to simple things like food and...
