New York lawmakers on Tuesday refused to advance a bill that would have provided free college tuition to the families of military personnel from the state who were killed in the line of duty. The Assembly’s Higher Education Committee voted 15 to 11 to hold the bipartisan bill, effectively ending its chances of making it to a floor vote this session. The move comes a week after lawmakers passed a $175 billion state budget that included $27 million to provide college tuition aid for undocumented immigrants.

South Carolina officials say a new specialty license plate for family members of soldiers killed in combat is now available. The Department of Motor Vehicles on Friday announced the availability of its the Gold Star Family license plate. Motorists must provide military documentation of their family member's death to get the plate. DMV director Marcia Adams says the plates serve as a memorial for slain service men and women. She says several other states offer similar plates. Motorist who qualify for the plates must pay $30 every two years along with the regular registration fee.
