South Carolina officials say a new specialty license plate for family members of soldiers killed in combat is now available.

The Department of Motor Vehicles on Friday announced the availability of its the Gold Star Family license plate. Motorists must provide military documentation of their family member's death to get the plate.

DMV director Marcia Adams says the plates serve as a memorial for slain service men and women. She says several other states offer similar plates.

Motorist who qualify for the plates must pay $30 every two years along with the regular registration fee.

For those folks, vanity plates should be free of charge.

I disagree. They aren’t free. They already paid all they should have to, though (and then some).

Nice observation.

What something is worth is what how much someone is willing to pay.

Wow. I think there is also Purple Heart, Veteran, Disabled Veteran, POW, and? any others?
I’d like a Blue Star plate :) of course my car is already covered with Air Force paraphernalia so I will be overstating the obvious...

The new “I believe” plate is only $5 over the regular plate price. Why is this plate $30 every two years?? I hope they are verifying this too. I would hate to think some unethical person would get one to use to take advantage of the love and appreciation most of us hold for our Gold Star Families. I was told that the purple heart plates don’t require documentation, although I am not sure if that is true.

The plates should be FREE.
