  • GitHub leak exposes Chinese offensive cyber operations – researchers

The leaked documents supposedly discuss spyware developed by I-Soon, a Chinese infosec company, that’s targeting social media platforms, telecommunications companies, and other organizations worldwide. Researchers suspect the operations are orchestrated by the Chinese government. Unknown individuals allegedly leaked a trove of Chinese government documents on GitHub. The documents reveal how China conducts offensive cyber operations with spyware developed by I-Soon, Taiwanese threat intelligence researcher Azaka Sekai claims. While several researchers have analyzed the supposedly leaked documents, no official confirmation of their veracity exists as of the writing of this article. We have reached out to I-Soon but did not receive...

The keynote speaker of the World Economic Forum’s 2024 annual conference in Davos was Ursula von der Leyen, European Commission President. She stated the top global risk for the EU is disinformation and misinformation, declaring disinformation destroys trust and limits the ability to “tackle the big global challenges.” In plain English, trust can only be restored by censoring inconvenient facts and evidence. Below is a short clip (1:39) highlighting her disinformation sermon. The top risk in the WEF’s 2024 Global Risk Report is disinformation. If not controlled, societies will be polarized, elections will be disrupted, and there will be mistrust...

Apple is the latest company to ban employees from using generative AI tools like ChatGPT. OpenAI’s chatbot stores users’ conversations to train the company’s AI systems. Apple has restricted employees from using AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT over fears confidential information entered into these systems will be leaked or collected. ... Apple employees have also been warned against using GitHub’s AI programming assistant Copilot. Apple has good reason to be wary. By default, OpenAI stores all interactions between users and ChatGPT. These conversations are collected to train OpenAI’s systems and can be inspected by moderators for breaking the company’s terms...
  • You can now play Lunar Lander in the Windows copy dialog box -- here's how

[dayglored comment] Those of us who have been forced to wait forever as Windows copies some huge file... well here's a way to make the wait more tolerable. Copying a large file from one drive to another, or over a network, can take quite a while, and there’s nothing you can do in that time, but wait. However, an enterprising developer has found a way to make the copy dialog more interesting -- he’s added a fully playable version of the arcade classic Lunar Lander to it. And this is no basic addition -- you can choose your difficulty level...
  • Elon Musk says that Twitter's algorithm should be open source

If Elon Musk is indeed able to buy Twitter, the platform could look a lot different. In his first public, non-tweeted comments since the saga began, Musk addressed why he wants to buy the company, and changes he would want to bring about. “Twitter has become kind of the de-facto town square,” he said. “It's just really important that people have both the reality and the perception that they're able to speak freely within the bounds of the law.” In terms of specific changes, Musk said Twitter should open-source its algorithms and minimize the interventions it takes in policing content....

Massive data breaches have become so common that we’ve gotten numb to reports detailing another hack or 0-day exploit. That doesn’t reduce the risk of such events happening, as the cat-and-mouse game between security experts and hackers continues. As some vulnerabilities get fixed, others pop up requiring attention from product and service providers. The newest one has a name that will not mean anything to most people. They call the hack Log4Shell in security briefings, which doesn’t sound very scary. But the new 0-day attack is so significant that some people see it as the worst internet hack in history.......
  • DHS warns of critical flaw in widely used software [Log4j]

    CNN ^ | December 11, 2021 | Sean Lyngaas,
The vulnerability is in Java-based software known as "Log4j" that large organizations, including some of the world's biggest tech firms, use to configure their applications. Apple's cloud computing service, security firm Cloudflare and one of the world's most popular video games, Minecraft, are among the organizations that run Log4j, according to security researchers. The vulnerability can offer a hacker a relatively easy way to access an organization's computer server. From there, an attacker could devise other ways to access systems on an organization's network. Security experts say that the fallout from the software flaw could continue for days and weeks...

Benford's Law, also called the Newcomb–Benford law, the law of anomalous numbers, or the first-digit law, is an observation about the frequency distribution of leading digits in many real-life sets of numerical data. The law states that in many naturally occurring collections of numbers, the leading digit is likely to be small. For example, in sets...

We will update the time series tables in the following days, aiming to provide a cleaner and more organized dataset consistent with our new/current naming convention. We will also be reporting a new variable (i.e, testing), as well as data at the county level for the US. All files will continue to be updated daily around 11:59PM UTC.The followiing specific changes will be made: Three new time series tables will be added for the US. The first two will be the confirmed cases and deaths, reported at the county level. The third, number of tests conducted, will be reported at...

US County level info was extremely useful and important. It looks like since 3/10, county level info has been removed. The ArcGis JHU map no longer shows county level numbers. Please bring it back. This seems to be the data set after which this change started happening: 82e1397#diff-eb3e961500680278537f38c751212d2e cscollett commented 1 hour ago • Yes, it sounds like they were having some issues with the county data lagging the state data or some places not reporting by county at all. Having both was also resulting in double counting if people didn't programmatically divide the by-state and by-county data, and aggregate...

Some programmers were a little wary when Microsoft bought the company-agnostic programming platform GitHub for $7.5 billion in early June. Now, nearly 100 of them are threatening to leave unless Microsoft drops its contract with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, following widespread condemnation of the agency's actions to split up immigrant families at the US-Mexico border, but before President Trump signed his executive order reversing the ICE policy. Microsoft was actually one of the tech companies that most strongly condemned ICE, in fact, and one of the first to take a stand, saying it was "dismayed" and...

Has the NSA just been hacked? Security experts speaking with FORBES think it’s possible, after a group published malware and attack code allegedly belonging to the Equation Group, a crew linked to the US intelligence agency. But while many believe the leak looks legitimate, the hackers could have pulled off a very clever ruse. --- Two days ago, on August 13, a group calling themselves The Shadow Brokers released files on Github, claiming they came from the Equation Group. The files included code allegedly designed to exploit firewalls from American manufacturers Cisco, Juniper and Fortinet . One Chinese company, Topsec,...

Online source code repository and team collaboration service GitHub has been under fire after an anti-white agenda was revealed within the company’s “Social Impact Team.” According to Tech Insider’s reveal on GitHub’s current situation, CEO Chris Wanstrath is radically changing the company. The former flat structure that eliminated substantial hierarchy has been replaced with supervisors and middle managers, and the ability for employees to work remotely has been cut back in favour of mandatory office working environments. These changes have prompted many long-term employees to leave, with some reportedly being ousted if they cannot meet the new requirements. GitHub’s Social...
