THREE quarters of Germany’s refugees will be long-term unemployed and claiming benefits for years, it was admitted today. Aydan Özoğuz, commissioner for immigration, refugees and integration, told the Financial Times that only a quarter to a third of the newcomers would enter the labour market over the next five years, and “for many others we will need up to 10”. The Institute for Employment Research (IAB) found only 45 per cent of Syrian refugees in Germany have a school-leaving certificate and 23 per cent a college degree. The latest figures are “the tip of the iceberg” according to Christian advocacy charity Open Doors. Some 743 Christians and 10 Yazidis were the victims of religious motivated attacks between February and September 2016, with some of victims aged five to 12 years old. Migrant centres in Germany must do more to protect Christians from the attacks with are said to “occur frequently and nationwide” at the hands of some Muslims in the camps. Germany’s investigative police agency reported that the number of dangerous Islamists in Germany has sharply risen over the past year. In a report published in the Sunday edition of the German daily newspaper “Die Welt”, the German Criminal Police Office (BKA) said it had tracked 497 instances of “threats” or individuals with extremist views who could be suspected of carrying out terrorist attacks. Germany's government expects to spend around 93.6 billion euros by the end of 2020 on costs related to the refugee crisis, a magazine said on Saturday, citing a draft from the federal finance ministry for negotiations with the country's 16 states. The figure is likely to stoke concerns, particularly among growing anti-immigration movements, on the impact of new arrivals on Europe's largest economy which took in more than a million people last year, many from Syria and other war zones. A 51-year-old German woman is being evicted from her home of 16 years to make way for refugees. Bettina Halbey, a 51-year-old nurse, has lived alone in her flat in the small western German town of Nieheim since her children grew up. On September 1, she received a letter from the local municipality, telling her the building was being turned into a refugee shelter and she had until next May to leave. Yesterday, the Mail reported how social workers and women’s groups in Giessen wrote a letter to the local state parliament claiming that rape and child abuse were rife in the refugee camp. Islamic extremists in Germany are trying to recruit Syrian refugees to their cause, the country’s domestic security service has said. More than 800,000 refugees will come to Germany this year, the state premier of Germany's biggest state, North Rhine-Westphalia, said on Tuesday. "I think it's clear to all of us that the number won't stay at 800,000," Hannelore Kraft said, adding that this government forecast was three weeks old.
