The campaign of Democratic rabbi and psychologist Dennis Shulman for New Jersey’s 5th District is beginning to gain steam, capturing local and national support as well as attention as he seeks to become the first blind member of Congress in generations. In his bid to unseat three-term Republican Rep. Scott Garrett , Shulman reported more than $300,000 raised through March 31, including donations from Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer ’s political action committee, Washington state Rep. Brian Baird ’s campaign committee, and members of the psychology and religious communities. Shulman also invested $52,000 in personal funds into his campaign. He...

PS3: difficult stories emerge in run up to Euro launch http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/games/archives/2007/02/13/ps3_difficult_stories_emerge_in_run_up_to_euro_launch.html [...] More juicy perhaps, is the comment made on a blog named FreeRepublic.com, by EA employee Dr. Andrew Garrett: "My opinion - get the 360 and/or the Wii. Skip the PS3 unless there's a big change in the near future." You can read his full post here. Naturally, anti-Sony zealots are spinning this as 'EA says skip PS3', which means Dr Garrett is probably in a whole heap of trouble. That's the problem with the modern videogame industry and the web - the two are utterly incompatible... Blog culture...

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- When Scott Garrett, a New Jersey state representative, ran in Republican primaries against then-U.S. Rep. Marge Roukema in 2000, Garrett was backed by the Club for Growth, a highly aggressive political group run by supply-side enthusiasts in Washington, D.C. When Roukema retired in 2002, Garrett ran in a five-way Republican primary. The Club for Growth endorsed Garrett's candidacy, and helped the anti-abortion, gun-rights conservative win the GOP nomination in a heavily Republican district. Garrett cruised to victory in the general election. Now the Club for Growth faces a major lawsuit from the Federal Election Commission. The bipartisan...

NEW IPSWICH - In the latest twist of his public battle against illegal immigrants, Police Chief Garrett Chamberlain has taken what may be a unique legal approach: He has charged a man from Mexico with criminal trespass because he was in town without legal documents. As defined in state law (RSA 635:2), a person is guilty of criminal trespass “if, knowing that he is not licensed or privileged to do so, he enters or remains in any place.” “If we’re going to have immigration, it needs to be controlled and we need to know what’s happening on our borders. Nobody...

Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004 1:47 p.m. EST Annan Refuses to Stop 'Carrying On' at U.N.; Congressman Suggests Jail Scandal-plagued U.N. boss Kofi Annan today rejected the calls of U.S. lawmakers to resign and insisted he would "carry on" as secretary-general for two more years. "I have quite a lot of work to do, and I'm carrying on with my work," Annan said. "We have a major agenda next year, and the year ahead, trying to reform this organization. So we'll carry on." Here's the first definition for the intransitive verb "carry on" in our dictionary, Miriam-Webster's Collegiate: "to behave or...

n an ordinary news day, CNN is like a sip of iced tea. Fox News is a gulp of Jolt Cola. It is the favorite news source of conservative-minded viewers, but Fox's anti-liberal sensibility is not its only draw. Even on matters as uncontested as the weather, Fox News's heart ticks to a faster, louder beat; it is a network that presents the news with pizazz and a frisky tone. ("Back to you, guys" is how reporters in the field address the anchors in the studio.) And its top commentators express a righteous indignation - mostly at the mainstream media,...

Scott Garrett inherited the 5th Congressional District on Tuesday, defeating a Democrat who had declared herself the rightful heir to retiring Republican Marge S. Roukema. With 99 percent of districts reporting, Garrett, a Republican assemblyman from Sussex County, had 108,372 votes, or 59 percent, to Anne Sumers' 71,562, or 39 percent. Independent Michael J. Cino had 4,073 votes, or 2 percent. At the Sheraton Crossroads in Mahwah, Garrett surrounded himself with his wife, Mary Ellen, and daughters Jennifer and Brittany and spoke of his faith. "I want to begin this evening by giving thanks to God for the many blessings...

BERGENFIELD - Scott Garrett, a conservative Republican, twice lost bitter primary bids to unseat moderate Rep. Marge Roukema before she decided to retire.

So, what did Garrett's strong win Tuesday over a Democrat who styled herself as Rouke ma's heir reflect? Some analysts thought that the race might be close. Rouke ma did not endorse either can didate, but rather told voters to base their choice on the issues. As it turned out, Garrett, 43, of Wantage, received 116,280 votes on Tuesday, or 60 percent of those cast. Anne Sumers, 45, of Paramus, received 74,204 votes, or 38 percent. Indepen dent candidate Michael J. Cino got the remaining 2 percent.

WASHINGTON -- For a low-key guy, Scott Garrett has made a lot of noise during his first year in Congress. Usually, freshmen House members lack the clout or the chutzpah to stand their ground against party elders. But from his vote in January not to extend unemployment benefits to his vote last month against a Medicare prescription-drug plan, the Sussex County Republican has quietly but firmly held to his conservative ideals. Unlike some members, Garrett said he's not in Washington to snare as much federal aid as he can for his northern New Jersey district, which includes all of Warren...

An American Empire! If You Want It instead of Freedom, Part 1 by Richard M. Ebeling Fifty years ago, the classical liberal author and journalist Garet Garrett published a collection of essays called The People's Pottage (1953). In the midst of the Korean War, he tried to persuade the American people that the United States was on a new course that conflicted with the original conception of the nation. Its constitutional safeguards for the preservation of freedom were being threatened and undermined by the role the government was assuming around the world. The specific danger was reflected in the title...

Six days after terrorists crashed two jetliners into the World Trade Center, Anne Sumers logged on to an Internet message board for former students of a school she attended decades ago in Afghanistan, where her father was working at the time. President Bush was promising to hunt down Osama bin Laden in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan, and aggression toward Muslims and others who looked Muslim had begun to surface in the United States. The day before Sumers logged into the chat room, a Sikh gas station owner in Mesa, Ariz., was killed by a gunman who apparently thought the man was Muslim...

Capitol Hill (CNSNews.com) - Republicans focused their mid-term election campaigns on homeland defense and the potential of a war with Iraq while Democrats mainly concentrated on the economy, Social Security, and healthcare issues. But for many candidates in both parties, their position on the Second Amendment played a significant role in their election or defeat. Preliminary analysis indicates that, of 24 Senate candidates endorsed by the National Rifle Association (NRA), 21 were elected. The South Dakota Senate race is within the 500-vote margin mandating a recount, and would mean an additional NRA victory if Republican Rep. John Thune surpassed incumbent...

In 5th, first race in a long time Thursday, October 24, 2002 By SHANNON D. HARRINGTON Staff Writer For the first time in more than two decades, the election in northern New Jersey's Republican-dominated 5th Congressional District is a horse race. But competitive though the contest may be compared with past ones, Republican state Assemblyman Scott Garrett appears to have a clear edge over Democrat Anne Sumers in his bid to succeed 11-term GOP Rep. Marge S. Roukema. The Record Poll this week found the conservative Sussex County lawmaker was ahead of the Republican-turned-Democrat Sumers, 49 percent to 41 percent,...

In the race for Rep. Marge Roukema's 5th district House seat, Republican E. Scott Garrett leads Democrat Anne Ricks Sumers by a 48%-33% margin, according to a poll conducted by Public Opinion Strategies for the National Republican Congressional Committee.

The Sumers campaign disputes the NRCC numbers and released their own internal poll from last week, which shows the race in a statistical dead heat, Garrett 42%, Sumers 40%. The Democratic poll shows Sumers leading Garrett by eight points in the Bergen County portion of the district, and losing by 21 points in the other three counties.

The two candidates vying to succeed retiring Congresswoman Marge S. Roukema questioned each others' commitment to public education Tuesday.Democrat Anne Sumers said her opponent, Republican Assemblyman Scott Garrett of Sussex County, has harmed public schools with his voting record, and Garrett accused Sumers of hypocrisy because she has not voted in her local school elections for more than a decade. At a news conference behind Ridgewood High School on Tuesday, Sumers surrounded herself with teachers and local school board officials and vowed to fight for more federal money for teacher training and school construction."My drive for public education will never wane,"...
