San Diego State University has suspended 14 fraternities amid allegations that “possible misconduct” at one of them may have been linked to the death of a 19-year-old student over the weekend, the authorities said. The student, Dylan Hernandez, was found without a pulse by his dormitory roommate and was hospitalized Thursday after reportedly attending a fraternity event the night before, according to the San Diego County medical examiner’s office. On Friday, the San Diego State University Police Department opened an investigation and the university president, Adela de la Torre, suspended the Interfraternity Council and its 14 affiliated fraternity chapters.

Fraternities at the University of California, Los Angeles are banned indefinitely from serving alcohol at in-house parties and events days after a former president was arrested on sexual assault allegations. The UCLA Interfraternity Council announced the booze-free rule on Wednesday citing safety concerns. 'Safety will always be the main priority when evaluating the IFC community and we are working towards enacting measures to promote security and prioritize safety,' a statement from the council read.

Ohio State University has suspended all sorority and fraternity activities citing investigations into hazing and alcohol abuse involving some chapters, joining a growing list of U.S. schools that have taken similar steps. The public university in Columbus, which has more than 45,000 undergraduate students, said in a statement sent to campus organizations on Thursday that 11 of its 37 Interfraternity Council (IFC) chapters have been the subject of such investigations this semester alone.

Ohio State has suspended all activities for Interfraternity Council chapters, effective immediately, the university said Thursday in a letter to IFC presidents. Eleven fraternity chapters have been investigated this semester by Ohio State for violations of the code of student conduct.

Connecticut’s Wesleyan University told campus fraternities Monday that they must support co-educational membership by 2017 or lose their official recognition at the school. “With equity and inclusion in mind, we have decided that residential fraternities must become fully co-educational over the next three years,” administrators told students in a campus-wide email. “If the organizations are to continue to be recognized as offering housing and social spaces for Wesleyan students, women as well as men must be full members and well-represented in the body and leadership of the organization.”
