  • Taiwan Bans Sale, Eating of Dog and Cat Meat

    04/12/2017 4:45:29 PM PDT · by nickcarraway · 29 replies
Taiwan has outlawed the consumption of dog and cat meat, as the island’s legislature on Tuesday passed a landmark amendment to its animal protection laws. The island’s official Central News Agency (CNA) said the revision showed the transition “from a society in which dog meat was regularly consumed” to where “many people treat pet cats and dogs as valued members of their families.” Previously, the Animal Protection Act only covered the slaughter and sale of dog and cat meat. Individuals who eat or trade dog or cat meat can now be fined between $1,640 to $8,200. The amendment also bans...
  • Camel Milk in London and Paris

“Camelicious” is a Dubai based dairy brand, which produces and exports camel milk products to the world. Its factory is the first of its kind in the world, producing liquid and powdered milk, cheese, margarine, ice cream and even shampoo. With its products shipped to cities such as London and Paris, Camelicious seeks to expand its export network to include every country in the world. An ambitious plan some would say, but with the continued high demand for camel milk produce and an increased awareness of its benefits, its future expansion may not be off the mark.
  • Is It Okay to Make Your Seder About Trump?

    New York Magazine ^ | April 10, 2017 | Jonathan Chait
Donald Trump is probably going to come up at my family’s Passover seder tonight, just as a matter of statistical probability, since approximately 100 percent of my family gatherings get around to the subject of the current president of the United States. Also, of course, liberal Judaism has grown increasingly politicized, along with the rest of the culture. (Our temple sometimes appears to be a hub of progressive social and political activism, with a dab of religion on the side.) But the growing tradition of intermingling Judaism with politics has inspired a new counter-tradition of conservatives decrying just that. “There’s...

Customers lined up to try the cuisine, which is thought to be a traditional dish in the rural areas of JapanCurious cuisine enthusiasts lined up outside a Tokyo's ramen restaurant this weekend to try out a rather bizarre dish . On Sunday, lucky 'first come first served' Nagi customers were given the opportunity to try traditional Japanese cuisine - ramen served with insects . At the one-day event, the restaurant served 'insect tsukemen', where customers dip the noodles into the soup of their choice, containing either crickets, grasshoppers and silkworm powder. The recipe was created after the success of the...
  • As KFC shuns some antibiotics, U.S. chicken industry deploys wet wipes, oregano

To meet increasing demand for meat raised without certain antibiotics, top U.S. chicken company Tyson Foods Inc and rival producers are turning to sanitizing wipes, bacteria-reducing fog and even oregano to keep birds healthy. Some have spent years of trial and error on new techniques to figure out replacements for human drugs, part of a fight against the rise of dangerous antibiotic-resistant bacteria in people. Yum Brands Inc's KFC on Friday became the last of the big three U.S. chicken restaurants to move away from antibiotics important to human medicine. McDonald's Corp and privately held Chick-fil-A had already made similar...
  • Why Japan’s Ancient Natto Could Be a Key to a Healthy Life

It's not the prettiest dish, but natto has some powerful health benefits. When you think of Japanese cuisine, fresh, delicate flavours and intricately presented morsels spring to mind. Amidst all this loveliness, gooey, sticky and stinky fermented soybeans seem somewhat out of place. Called natto, this pungent dish is lesser known in Australia, but it lurks in the freezer section of Asian supermarkets, waiting for adventurous types to seek it out. Craig Anderson, star of My Japanese Diet (screening April 6 on SBS) is one such culinary maverick. In fact, when SBS Food calls him to chat about the documentary, he’s...

new Zealand Prime Minister Bill English has waded into the Internet's favorite debate subject, pizza, by endorsing a controversial topping: canned spaghetti. English's Facebook post Monday revealed he is a fan of Icelandic President Gudni Johannesson's least-favorite topping, pineapple, as well as the even more controversial canned spaghetti. "Cooked dinner for the family last night -- like if you agree with tinned spaghetti on pizza!" he wrote in the post, which included photos of his spaghetti-and-pineapple topped pies. The post received thousands of likes from apparent fans of spaghetti pizza, while hundreds of commenters chided the premiere for violating the...

One of the best dishes that my husband makes is a ‘Chicken Primavera’ pasta dish, with asparagus. This recipe calls for Vermouth, which I don’t like very much; so we use a dry white wine instead; and you don’t have to use Fettuccine - it’s also nice with little shells or any other whimsical pasta. I think I originally found this in one of those little recipe books that they place at the supermarket checkout to lure you into an impulse purchase. I’ve been ‘impulsed’ many times, and have found some very nice recipes in those pamphlets ;-) Chicken Primavera...
  • Fruits and vegetables' latest superpower? Lowering blood pressure

"Decreasing sodium intake is a well-established way to lower blood pressure," McDonough says, "but evidence suggests that increasing dietary potassium may have an equally important effect on hypertension." Hypertension is a global health issue that affects more than one billion people worldwide. The World Health Organization estimates that hypertension is responsible for at least 51 percent of deaths due to stroke and 45 percent of deaths due to heart disease. McDonough explored the link between blood pressure and dietary sodium, potassium and the sodium-potassium ratio in a review article published in the April 2017 issue of the American Journal of...
  • Tumor necrosis factor found to directly regulate blood pressure

Investigators at the Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research have discovered a surprising new role for tumor necrosis factor (TNF): namely, that it is a major regulator of small blood vessel function, the key determinant of blood pressure. The study is published online today in Nature Communications. TNF has long been tied to inflammation, giving rise to the use of anti-TNF medications for chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and IBS. Now, after years of studying TNF's cell signaling functions in the vascular system, researchers found that TNF directly impacts how the smallest arteries constrict - and thus...

  • Stinky cooking odours constitute a crime, Italy's supreme court rules

Cooking may be a national passion, but Italians who allow the pungent aroma of a simmering pot of pasta sauce or a vat of deep fried fish to waft into a neighbour’s home are committing a crime, the country’s highest court has ruled. In the best traditions of legalese the world over, the Court of Cassation in Rome even came up with a term for the offence – “olfactory molestation”. The ruling emerged from a long-running battle between neighbours in an apartment block in the town of Monfalcone on the Adriatic coast, close to the border with Slovenia. Residents complained...
  • This Lincoln Square Woman Delivered Jimmy John's Freaky Far — To Ireland

Everyone should have a friend like Allie Cooney. The Lincoln Square resident doesn't just post Facebook greetings to far-flung pals on their birthdays. Nope, she goes the extra mile — actually the extra 3,600 miles — to make the day special. Last Friday, Cooney flew from Chicago to Ireland to surprise her best friend, Caroline Gray, with a visit on her 30th birthday, and she had an unusual gift in tow. A Jimmy John's No. 4 Turkey Tom sandwich. Cooney picked up the sub from the Jimmy John's at 2336 W. Lawrence Ave., where manager Emily Aman had been given...

Editor's note: In recognition of April 5th's National Deep Dish Pizza Day, we're republishing this how-to guide. Dig in!Chicago is the city of pizza giants like Pequod's, Gino's East, Lou Malnati's and Giordano's. And maybe ... you? Rony Garcia, who's worked at Gino's East for decades and made tons of pizzas professionally, makes deep dish at home for his family (though it's "not the same [as] Gino's," he contends). The pizzeria opened at 162 E. Superior St. in 1966 and uses the same deep-dish recipe — complete with a golden-yellow crust and mozzarella cheese — as when it started. Unfortunately,...

I have to admit it. I love me some IHOP pancakes. Breakfast is one of my favorite meals to eat at restaurants, though itÂ’s funny, because IÂ’m normally a savory foods girl. I like to order chicken fried steak, bacon or eggs. BUT thereÂ’s always an exception when we go to IHOP. I always get their pancakes. They are amazeballs! I found this copycat version from a blog off Pinterest and read all the reviews. They were all great and everyone said they loved them. Some commented they were better than IHOPÂ’s. So that was the seller to me. I...
  • 'Inebriated' Teacher Let Minor Drive Her to Waffle House: Cops

A Florida high school math teacher made a miscalculation when she let a 14-year-old drive her to Waffle House while she was drunk, authorities said. Terra Virgin, 32, was arrested Sunday night on charges of child neglect and permitting an unauthorized minor to drive after her car was pulled over in Tampa with the teen behind the wheel. Virgin, a teacher at Freedom High School, had five beers but had a craving for a meal and convinced the teen to give her a ride, authorities said. "The adult that was in the car was quite inebriated and she was aware...

Bus riders, beware. Eating food, including pizza, can result in a costly citation in San Francisco. A man experienced that reality the hard way back in March when he was handed a ticket, which can yield a $250 fine, for chowing down on a pizza at a Muni bus stop, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The citation was delivered on March 5 to a homeless man who purchased a pie for his friend's birthday before enjoying some slices at a bus stop located at Market and 7th Streets, the newspaper reported. The exact wording on the ticket referenced "eating...

A man who choked to death at a Voodoo Doughnuts shop in Denver was reportedly trying to wolf down a giant doughnut during a food-eating challenge. Travis Malouff, 42, died Sunday while attempting to down a half-pound glazed doughnut. The cause of death was "asphyxia, due to obstruction of the airway," the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner said Monday morning. Malouff was taking the shop's "Tex-Ass Challenge," which requires participants to consume the colossal doughnut — the equivalent of six regular doughnuts — within an 80-second time limit.
