Portland authorities are calling on the government to remove fencing around a federal courthouse amid ongoing protests or face legal action, according to a recently published official letter. The “illegally” installed concrete and metal barriers “are both unpermitted and represent a hazard to the traveling public,” said a letter sent with a cease-and-desist order to a federal official Thursday. Among other things, they block a bike lane, according to the document, published online by Willamette Week.

The General Services Administration's abrupt announcement last week that it was suspending the purchase of a city-owned site for a new federal courthouse has left a great cloud of confusion in its wake. Federal officials should move swiftly to clear up that confusion - and the frustration that has accompanied it - by detailing the reasons that prompted their decision. City officials, along with members of Oregon's congressional delegation, have asked for clarification, and the GSA should respond with dispatch and candor. If the GSA genuinely wants to resolve concerns about the courthouse project, then it must make clear what...

The mystery continued Monday as city officials tried to sort out the reasons behind the General Services Administration's 11th-hour decision to hold off on buying city-owned land for a long-anticipated $70 million courthouse in Eugene. Only three weeks ago, Mayor Jim Torrey got an e-mail from a GSA official that indicated that the city and the agency were on track to begin construction at the site of the old Agripac cannery. In the Sept. 2 message, GSA Assistant Regional Administrator Robin Graf praised the city's ongoing cooperation. "As always, we appreciate our relationship with the City of Eugene and eagerly...

For the last hour the Federal courthouse in Kansas City Missouri has had traffic blocked off for a 1 block perimeter by local police. About 30 minutes ago, there were several vehicles parked out front, (ambulance, fire trucks and an unmarked white truck). Just now we observed a member of the bomb squad, (protective jacket and helmet) place a device next to the supposed suspicious package and then retreat back to the unmarked white truck. The official vehicles have pulled back to the one block perimeter. Does anyone else in the KC area have any more information?
