U.S. officials say a Pakistani-American charged with an attempted car bombing in New York City is cooperating with investigators as they try to determine a motive for the planned attack. Faisal Shahzad was arrested late Monday and charged with trying to blow up a sports utility vehicle in crowded Times Square on Saturday. Meanwhile, authorities in Pakistan say they have made arrests in connection with the failed car bombing. The man charged with numerous counts of terrorism was born in this tiny northwestern village known as Mohib Banda. Faisal Shahzad's father is a retired air vice marshal in the Pakistani...

The stunning events of September 11, 2001, were a potential template for future terrorist attacks. But since then, al-Qaida and its affiliates have been unable to mount a similar encore in the United States. The foiled Times Square attack may be a sign that these groups have been forced to shift tactics to smaller operations that are less spectacular, but are also harder to detect. Former CIA counterterrorism chief Robert Grenier says the failed Times Square bombing last Saturday may indicate that al-Qaida and its allies have abandoned more grandiose plans for the United States and are emphasizing smaller but...

DETROIT, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- The alleged Northwest airline bomber's lack of knowledge about the chemistry of his explosives may have averted a disaster in American skies, experts say. The chemical powder in Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab's explosive and the liquid in the syringe, meant to set it off, had a slim chance of causing a successful detonation, the Detroit Free Press reported Friday. One expert thinks whoever planned the attack lacked sufficient knowledge of the chemistry of the substances involved.

Washington (CNN) -- When the father of suspected terrorist Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab visited the U.S. embassy in Nigeria in November, he told officials he believed his son was under the influence of religious extremists and had traveled from London, England, to Yemen, a senior administration official said Monday. Revealing new details, the official also denied the father told officials his son might be on a suicide mission: "There was no suggestion he was about to carry out a terrorist act," the official said. A suspect in the foiled Christmas Day terror attack, Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab, is being held for allegedly...
