  • Troops Move on Crash Site in Ukraine, Foiling Deal

    NY Times ^ | JULY 27, 2014 | ANDREW E. KRAMER and ANDREW HIGGINS
Just hours after the Malaysian government reached an agreement with Ukrainian separatists on Sunday over access to the crash site of a Malaysian airliner shot down in rebel territory, the Ukrainian military launched an operation to recapture the debris fields, again stalling international efforts to secure the site. The heavy fighting threatened to torpedo hopes of a breakthrough and cause yet more delays in collecting evidence and retrieving the remaining bodies from the crash. Ukrainian security officials said they needed control over the site to prevent the pro-Russia separatists from destroying clues to the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17.

A 12-year-old girl was killed and seven people, including two other girls, were wounded in a roadside bomb attack near an army base in Thailand's insurgency-plagued south, police said Monday. (snip) The attack came at the end of the Ramadan holy month, in which a spurt of attacks has occurred. It followed a major incident on Friday, in which a vehicle bomb exploded in a commercial district in Yala province, killing two people and wounding tens of other civilians. More than 5,000 people have been killed in Thailand's three Muslim-dominated southernmost provinces since an Islamic insurgency erupted in 2004. The...
  • Danny Dayan: Obama, Kerry Caused 'Long-Term Damage'

    Arutz Sheva ^ | 28/7/14 | Yaakov Levi
Danny Dayan, head of the Council of Judea and Samaria, said Monday that asking Israel to stop its attacks on Hamas at this time was “a perversion of morality and diplomacy.” Israelis understand quite well, he said, that “they are fighting for their homes. No matter what we do the enemy will never be satisfied” without Israel's destruction. “We must continue fighting until our goals are reached.” Dayan was speaking in light of the heavy pressure being placed on Israel by US President Barack H Obama for an immediate and unconditional cease-fire. In his proposal, Obama said that the issue...
  • Obamacare Fraud: A How-To Guide [Dems wronly claim the GAO report doesn’t mean an opening for abuse]

    National Review ^ | 7/28/2014 | Jillian Kay Melchior
When the Government Accountability Office reported last week that several of its investigators had successfully used fake identities and incorrect information to sign up for subsidized Obamacare coverage, Democrats reacted with skepticism. They claimed that the report didn’t necessarily signal big potential for fraud or abuse. Representative Sander Levin (D., Mich.) said: “There would be no financial windfall, as any government subsidy goes directly to insurance companies and not to the consumer seeking that insurance. In fact, people committing these frauds would be risking severe fines and possibly jail time.” And Representative Joseph Crawley, (D., N.Y.) called the report “much...
  • Pakistan: Sunni Muslim mob murders five Ahmadis for “blasphemy”

In Pakistan and elsewhere, Sunnis viciously and violently persecute Ahmadis as heretics and apostates. Yet in the West, Ahmadi spokesmen such as the venomous and supercilious Qasim Rashid and the unctuously pious Haris Zafar make a tidy living allying with their persecutors and aiding and abetting their sinister agenda by telling non-Muslim audiences what they want to hear — that Islam doesn’t actually have any of the doctrines that Sunnis invoke to persecute Ahmadis and others. And indeed, Ahmadi Islam doesn’t — but Rashid and Zafar don’t bother to mention to their marks that they represent a form of Islam...

A formerly homeless student who wrote a letter to President Obama to share his story and get some advice is selling a handwritten response to pay off his tuition. Jesse Grainger wrote, “As a child I had big dreams of going to college and doing great things . . . I came from a small town where most people were poor, especially my mother and me. My mom adopted me when I was one day old. She raised me to believe that education was the most important thing that I could ever get. My adopted mom died when I was 13.”

Prediction: In 10 years, it’ll be illegal to spank your kids. Progressivism’s never-ending zeal to intrude into our lives, bust up families and force us all to march to its grim beat means that yesterday’s absurdity turns into today’s hot topic in lefty opinion magazines turns into tomorrow’s law.

Nigerian Boko Haram militants kidnapped the wife of Cameroon's vice prime minister and killed at least three people on Sunday in a cross-border attack involving more than 200 assailants in the northern town of Kolofata, Cameroon officials said. A local religious leader, or lamido, named Seini Boukar Lamine, who is also the town's mayor, and five members of his family were also kidnapped in a separate attack on his home. British lawyers are getting ready to hit Russian President Vladimir Putin with a multi-million pound class action suit for his alleged role in the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH17 crash in eastern Ukraine this month, an English daily reported. According to British daily The Sunday Telegraph, senior Russian military commanders and politicians closely-linked to Putin will likely be also included in the suit, set to take place in American courts. “There has been talk of civil suits against Malaysia Airlines, but those immediately responsible are not only the separatists who are alleged to have fired the rocket at Flight MH17,...

  • Americans really wish they had elected Mitt Romney instead of Obama

Americans are so down on President Obama at the moment that, if they could do the 2012 election all over again, they'd overwhelmingly back the former Massachusetts governor's bid. That's just one finding in a brutal CNN poll, released Sunday, which shows Romney topping Obama in a re-election rematch by a whopping nine-point margin, 53 percent to 44 percent. That's an even larger spread than CNN found in November, when a survey had Romney winning a redo 49 percent to 45 percent.

In a new video recorded for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, first lady Michelle Obama says Democrats need to take this year’s midterms more seriously than they did either of her husband’s presidential elections. The video, her first effort on behalf of Democrats beyond a few scattered fundraisers so far, launches the DCCC’s new 1millionvotesfor2014.com website, timed to coincide with the 100-day countdown until the election. “When it comes to the midterm elections this November, we need you to be as passionate and as hungry as you were in 2008 and 2012 – in fact, you need to be even...

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton defended her handling of the U.S.-Russia relationship on Sunday, saying she remained "skeptical" of Russian President Vladimir Putin during her time as the top U.S. diplomat, despite a high-profile effort to "reset" relations between the two countries. Clinton and other U.S. officials also urged the Europeans to step up their economic sanctions against Russia, stressing the need to exact a price from the Russians for their interference in Ukraine and their alleged involvement in the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. Critics have said Clinton's "reset" initiative was naive because Russia was never...

Failure of official investigators to inspect the crash site properly and the length of time it has taken to examine forensic evidence may mean that those responsible are never foundThe inquiry into the shooting down of Flight MH17 risks becoming hopelessly compromised by the failure of official investigators to inspect the crash site properly – giving rebels nine days to destroy and tamper with vital evidence. The probable launch site of the ground-to-air missile, found by a Sunday Telegraph reporting team, also remains unexplored by the Dutch officials leading the investigation. Experts fear that the inquiry has become bogged down...
