Late yesterday, the first fruits of the Hobby Lobby decision fell into the lap of EWTN, the Catholic satellite television station which has fought the HHS mandate into the appellate court. Today would have been the first day that EWTN would have to start paying ruinous fines for refusing to provide free contraception and sterilization in its health insurance coverage. Fortunately, the Eleventh Circuit granted a stay not long after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Hobby Lobby: In a resounding victory for religious freedom, today EWTN was granted last minute relief from the Eleventh Circuit Court of...

The Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) has won a last-minute reprieve from enforcement of a federal mandate calling for required coverage of contraceptives in employees' health-care programs. Citing the Burwell v. Hobby Lobby decision announced by the Supreme Court on June 30, the 11th federal circuit appeals court issued an injunction blocking fines that would have been assessed against EWTN beginning on July 1 for a failure to comply with the contraceptive mandate. The 11th circuit court found, in issuing its order, that EWTN "has asserted, without dispute, that it 'is prohibited by its religion from signing, submitting, or facilitating...

Opinion analysis: Does the new religious exemption go far enough? (UPDATED) UPDATE 2:14 p.m. Acting swiftly in the wake of the Court’s ruling on Monday, and relying directly upon that decision, the Eleventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday blocked all enforcement of the mandate against an Alabama Catholic TV network, a non-profit entity. The concurring opinion of the Court of Appeals, written by Circuit Judge William H. Pryor, Jr., argued that the accommodation, discussed in the following post, is itself likely to be struck down.

The EWTN Global Catholic Network has filed a motion for emergency relief with the U.S. Supreme Court, asking for an injunction to bar enforcement of the federal contraception mandate. Michael Warsaw, chairman and CEO of EWTN, explained that the network has already requested this protection with the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, “but that court has yet to respond to our petition.” Without an injunction offering protection from the mandate, EWTN would be forced to comply with its demands starting July 1. As a result, the network filed its motion for emergency relief with the high court June 27. “We...

As a result, few people, including many Catholics, understand the reasons behind Church teaching. Do you? You'll be able to say "I do" after watching "Transforming Witness: Marriage in the Early Church," the latest episode in the "Franciscan University Presents" series. Join Mike Aquilina, Michael Harmon, Dr. Regis Martin, and Dr. Scott Hahn as they compare the Judeo-Christian approach to marriage with that of the pagan cultures of that time. Find out...

"I'd like you to convert Chicago," Father Robert Barron remembers his boss, Francis Cardinal George, archbishop of the Windy City, telling him about six years ago. The result of that charge will be airing on many PBS stations, starting this week. Barron, a Chicago priest and professor, has created a remarkable book and TV series called "Catholicism" -- which, in reintroducing a 2,000-year-old tradition, manages to be both elaborate and humble. It's self-conscious as a work of evangelization (complete with available study guides and a prayer card for those who care for such things), yet welcoming to a wide potential...

Our family is not going to send in any more donations, or give any more money into the Sunday Parish Church collection basket, until both the USCCB and EWTN stop trying to promote 'democrat party' efforts to reward illegal behaviors and support unlawful activities, such as the so-called "dream act", or the new un-legislated amnesty for illegal aliens by this democrat president. (Instead, for now, we will give all our donations and offerings and almsgiving to specific worthy pro-life and other charitable causes, such as "Priests for Life" and "St. Vincent Depaul", and we will use social networking media...

8 April, 2011 Dear friends, Last month I was a guest at the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) in Alabama, taping programs for a series on the paganization of culture. Thank you very much for your prayers for me. The shows will be broadcast on the Women of Grace program, hosted by Johnnette Bencovic, each day this coming week. The general theme of the series is "Occult Fiction: Inroad to the Culture." Both Johnnette and myself, as well as researcher Sue Brinkmann and Fr. Edmund de Silva, comment on various aspects of the spiritual war that is taking place in...

In response to many of the “toxic” TV shows targeting women, EWTN is launching a highly-anticipated new program called “The Catholic View for Women,” aimed at addressing issues relevant to today's woman from a Church-based perspective. The series – with the first show kicking off Friday, March 11 at 6:30 p.m. ET – will be hosted by author and broadcast journalist Teresa Tomeo, Executive Director of Priests for Life Janet Morana and Astrid Bennett Gutierrez, who is the Executive Director of Los Angeles Pregnancy Services and Vice President of Hispanics for Life and Human Rights. Topics for the first round...

In this discussion I will not employ such terms as "traditionalist," "conservative" or "neo Catholic" to distinguish different "strains" of Catholicism in the post conciliar Church. As useful as such terms may have been in the past, the ecclesial crisis has advanced to the point where one must speak frankly of who is, and who is not, adhering to the Roman Catholic religion in its integrity. This is also necessary because the proponents of New Church have not hesitated to render judgments on the Catholicity of those who have held fast to Tradition during this crisis, denouncing these faithful Catholics...

Credit: Patrick Novecosky Irondale, Ala., Apr 1, 2011 / 04:11 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- The Eternal Word Television Network said its decision to halt programming by the popular speaker Fr. John Corapi followed the lead of legitimate Church authority. “EWTN has an obligation to uphold the discipline and teachings of the Church,” president Michael Warsaw said on April 1. “In the network’s thirty years of existence, our practice has always been to discontinue airing programs featuring any cleric whose priestly faculties have been suspended, even if temporarily,”...

Official EWTN Statement Regarding Fr.John Corapi Dear EWTN Family:  We are aware that many of our supporters are disappointed in EWTN's decision to remove Father John Corapi's programs from the Network during his administrative leave. We too are greatly disappointed that EWTN had to make this difficult decision. We can assure you that it was made with much prayer and careful discernment. The fact is that Father John's own religious community has placed him on administrative leave and his capacity to function publicly as a priest has been suspended during the investigation of the charges against him. This was officially...

In this first episode of a two-part "Abundant Life" program, Johnette Benkovic asks Benedictine Father Matthew Habiger and pro-life researchers Charles Donovan and Jim Sedlak about the history and agenda of Planned Parenthood. This group, heavily taxpayer-funded, still embodies the ideology of its racist, anti-Catholic founder, Margaret Sanger; its abortion centers, often placed in minority areas, kill more than 150,000 American babies every year.         Knights Ronald Coco and Richard Bosse worked to obtain a new ultrasound machine for the Women’s New Life Center in Metairie, La., where Angela Thomas (right) is the executive director. (Photo by Mary Lou Uttermohlen)Faith was alone in a foreign land. She felt frightened, confused, angry and violated. Not knowing where to turn, she went to a local pregnancy center conveniently located near the university she attended. There, a positive pregnancy test confirmed her fears. An international college student studying for her master's degree, Faith didn't know how she could possibly continue her pregnancy and thought she had...
