Powerful storms ripped through Central Florida Monday Afternoon destroying mobile homes and toppling trees and injuring at least nine people. Four were serious. At least one of those is critical. The National Weather Service says an F2 tornado tore through the area. Early damage reports say as many as 200 mobile homes in the DeLand area suffered significant damage. For mobile home parks were near the intersection of State Road 11 and U.S. 17. A gas leak forced evacuations. "We took four hurricanes," said one man. "But nothing like this." The instructors and students of Embry-Riddle's CAPT (Commercial Airline Pilot Training) Program are being informed today that their program is a lame duck. Those currently in the program will finish their training, lest Riddle have to refund their money -- refunds are the wolfsbane of Riddle administrators. But effective immediately, no new pilots are being recruited. As each segment of the remaining students' training is completed, the instructors will be offered other positions -- or let go.
