During school hours, in front of students, Vassar Public Schools held an event which explicitly advocated for a school millage request. A panel that featured a private citizen and a group of administrators was videotaped and put up on the district’s Facebook page. The high school brought in the host of the local Cass River Radio Podcast for a 45-minute discussion with the district’s superintendent, high school principal, alternative education principal, community family liaison and technology director. During the talk, the panel did the following: Directed students to the pro-bond website and Facebook page. Said there are “neat things going...

Michigan’s current superintendent of public instruction claimed in a news article that first-year teachers in the state earn $28,000 a year. Superintendent Brian Whiston made his comment in an article in the Feb. 10 edition of MIRS News. If any full-time Michigan public school teacher is paid that amount, it would be an extremely rare instance. There were 540 Michigan public school districts in 2015-16, not counting charter schools. Michigan Capitol Confidential has reviewed hundreds of those districts’ union contracts and has not yet seen a starting salary under $30,000. The Michigan Department of Education didn’t return an email that...

  • Domestic Violence: More Guns, Less Injury

A new study shows that only 17 of 35,413 domestic violence incidents resulted in a gunshot wound. The study was based on police reports collected in Philadelphia in 2013. From psychcentral.com: A new study shows that when guns are part of domestic violence, women actually suffer fewer injuries, but experience greater fear. According to a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, thatÂ’s because when a gun enters the situation, women are more likely to back down than fight back. This is consistent with the use of guns in other crimes, and in self-defense. It is not limited to women....
  • Riding, roping, and ranching Third-graders learn the art of the cowboy

TOMBSTONE – Saddle up and hang onto your hats! It’s rodeo time! While Arizona celebrates Tucson Rodeo festivities, third-graders from Huachuca City School are learning all about riding, roping and ranching, as well as a little rodeoing on the side. On Wednesday, about 50 young buckaroos traveled to Tombstone High School for a crash course on cowboys and ranching. The Future Farmers of America students organized the event and worked with the young cowboys and cowgirls as they dabbled in bull riding and roping and learned how to saddle a horse. They met goats and other petting zoo animals and...

My three wishes for the Trump Administration: 1) That the the many unusual deaths and fatal accidents that have followed the Clintons and other high ranking Democrats be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted and that those guilty be convicted and fully punished. The victims and their families deserve justice. 2) That Obama's highly questionable natural born citizenship, and all the questionable documentation surrounding his identity be investigated, and all those involved by prosecuted, convicted, and fully punished. 3) That the Department of Education be completely shut down, the buildings razed, the foundation dug up, the stones pulverized, and the earth salted....

This may embarrass some Democrats and certainly put the finger on them a while. The GOP takes the original Constitution and has it transcribed as a piece of art, complete with the amendment lists and bill of rights and on the same type of paper the original was written on. Arrange a ceremony in Washington DC at the House, and invite all the Senators and Congressmen from each state to come and sign it as a re-affirmation and commitment to follow the Constitution and the Laws of the United States during a joint session of Congress. The progressives heads will...
  • Scofflaw School Districts Ignore Merit Pay Law, Face No Sanctions

Throughout the state of Michigan, public school districts are ignoring a 2010 law that mandates they provide merit pay to teachers. Although many districts admit they have no such policy, there appear to be no legal consequences for violating the law. Plymouth-Canton Community Schools became the latest district to admit it doesn’t offer its teachers merit pay despite a law that requires it. The law, signed by then-Gov. Jennifer Granholm, says districts must include job accomplishments as “a significant factor” in teacher compensation. Plymouth-Canton joins school districts in Lansing, Grand Rapids, Waterford and Walled Lake, among others, which do not...

The Smith family in DeWitt has endured more than its share of challenging circumstances. But having access to an online charter school has been a great help. During a single week in 2007, Sandy Smith was diagnosed with breast cancer and her son Andrew was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. After Andrew passed away at eight years old, the Smiths enrolled their two surviving children in a cyber school. “We thought this would be a great opportunity, a great fit for us, because we could take it with us wherever we were going, we would have teachers involved, and we’d...

    Inspired by Obama's "The Life of Julia" ^ | Feb 25 2017 | grey_whiskers
I'm sure that most of us to the right of center grew awfully tired of the propaganda put out by the Obama campaign. One of the worst was the execrable "The Life of Julia" YouTube piece contrasting the idyllic life under glorious Soviet multiracial healer Obama, as opposed to that known purveyor of"binders full of women" Romney. I give a synopsis, followed by corrections, with the benefits of hindsight: Slide 1: Julia goes to Head Start to help prepare for kindergarten under Obama. Under Romney/Ryan the budget would be cut. Correction: Ryan as replacement GOP chair for Weepy Boehner, gave...

An Ionia Public Schools teacher declared she was quitting after having an emotional meltdown in front of her second-grade students. She then abruptly walked out of the school, according to documents obtained in a Freedom of Information Act request. But after the school accepted the verbal notice as a resignation, the teacher claimed she did not formally quit, causing a monthslong battle over her employment status. Anne Purdun, a second-grade teacher at Emerson Elementary, yelled profanities in her classroom while students were present on April 20, 2016, according to charges filed by the school for a tenure proceeding, obtained through...

Amidst all of the liberal protests still taking place across America saying that this is not their America and Trump is not their president, there needs to be a protest saying ‘I want MY America back!!!’ My America goes back to a time when many politicians were still respected and placed the will of the people ahead of their personal agendas. My America started every day in school with prayer and then standing, placing right hand over the heart and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, including the line ‘one nation under God’. Teachers were still respected and actually taught us...

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Senate Democrats are speaking out after a bill was recently introduced that would drastically change how state professors are hired. Republican Senator Mark Chelgren of Ottumwa's proposed bill would freeze professor hiring at state universities until the faculty is balanced in terms of political ideology. This means, for example, a professor registered as a Democrat would not be hired unless the amount of Democrat and Republican faculty members at the school is within 10% of each other.

An elementary school teacher in Collier County, Florida was reassigned to administrative duties over a Facebook post during the “Day Without Immigrants” protest last Thursday. Parkside Elementary School computer lab instructor Veronica Fleming linked to a Chicago Tribune story about the nationwide protest and offered her take on the situation. “The funny part about immigrants staying home is the rest of us who pay for them are here at work like we’ve always been. Looks like less mouths to feed today. Have fun while you still can. So glad to hear about massive deportation. Let’s make America great again. Thanks...

Georgetown University's course catalog for its Masters in Journalism program reads like an advert for a farm team of liberal, agenda-driven rookies, destined for placement in the Capitol Hill bubble of see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil. According to the university, journalism students can look forward to, “mastering the art of compelling storytelling through firsthand experience in the vibrant political and cultural landscape of the nations’ capitol.” Shouldn’t there be some mention of the gathering of facts? Apparently not. For one half of the school's elective offerings feature a storytelling theme that runs counter to the...

In some circles, the myth persists that more money automatically translates into better education results. At a recent legislative hearing to explore changes to the state’s failing-schools law, one education official made a claim that collapses under a brief examination. According to MIRS News, Sen. Hoon-Yung Hopgood, D-Taylor, posed a question to a panel of witnesses about the relationship between funding and performance. But if the implication of his question was failing schools need more money before they can be fixed, the evidence is against him. The recently released final evaluation of the U.S. Department of Education’s $7 billion School...

Will it be St. Albans, Sidwell Friends, or somewhere else entirely? We asked educational experts for their predictions. When President-elect Donald Trump and his family move to D.C.—Melania and Barron are planning to stay in New York City through the end of the school year—Barron Trump will be the first First Son since John F. Kennedy, Jr. to live there. And where he ends up in school is a big question. In 35 years, no First Kid has gone to a school other than Sidwell Friends, the private Quaker school where Sasha Obama is currently enrolled and from which both...

A 14-year-old child bride from Syria came to Sweden and became pregnant with her husband, who is also her cousin. Now a Swedish court has approved of her marriage, because she appears "mature," and for religious and cultural reasons. The girl was married off to a cousin when she was only twelve years old. In Sweden, she has been placed with his aunt and her family. The social service authorities in Sweden thought her marriage is completely outrageous and took it to the justice system. But the judge does not think there is anything wrong with it, since she was...
