Note: The following text is a quote: Officials Consider Role in Haiti Beyond Immediate Relief By John J. Kruzel American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON, Jan. 27, 2010 – The U.S. government still is figuring out the details of American assistance in Haiti, Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell said here today, noting that Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and President Barack Obama discussed the issue yesterday. “I think that everybody would say by now that the aid is flowing in a very productive and helpful fashion,” Morrell told Pentagon reporters. “But the question now becomes, now that this immediate relief has...

Only days after Secretary of Defense Robert Gates explained the systemic flaws that allowed the Nov. 5 shootings at Fort Hood to take place, I was shocked at what I saw during one television report this morning -- especially in light of what other television reports have described. A short while ago, Fox News Channel reporter Steve Harrigan was shown standing upon a hill in Haiti where U.S. Army soldiers, which he described as members of the 82nd Airborne, were overseeing distribution of relief supplies to Haitians desperate for food, water and, in many cases, medical attention. As the camera...

  • Separatists in Puerto Rico condemn "militarized" aid to Haiti

(English-language translation) The National Hostosiano Independence Movement (MINH) severely criticized the position taken by Puerto Rico Governor Luis Fortuño to subordinate Puerto Rican aid to the population of Haiti to orders from the United States Army's Southern Command. "It hurts that Governor Fortuño conditions our aid to the dictates of the Southern Command. The militarization of humanitarian aid to Haiti which United States President Barack Obama promotes is an attempt to have the United States Army save face, something that is worthy of condemnation from our point of view," MINH Co-President Héctor L. Pesquera said. "Brazil, Venezuela, Cuba, and the...
  • Haiti Relief (Vanity)

Watching the ongoing relief efforst on TV, it is frustrating to know that people deserately need the basics and will probably not get them for days. The officials are offloading everything at the airport andit is stacking up. I am no expert, but IMO we need to be doing a 2 pronged approach to this disaster, and airstyle-type drop of World War II combined with the precise relief we are seeing set up on television. But why they are not doing the airdrops is beyond me. The peeople need the basics such as water and crackers and these could beeasily...

NBC's Chuck Todd reported on MSNBC's 'Morning Joe' this morning that Barack Obama called former President George W. Bush last night to ask him to co-lead relief efforts for earthquake victims in Haiti along with Bill Clinton. This would be in keeping with Bush asking Clinton and his father President George H. W. Bush to co-lead the relief efforts for the 2004 Sumatra tsunami.Todd said the White House may wait a few days to make the announcement.
