We’re not saying that every time your cat does something weird it’s a signal of an impending natural disaster, but you might want to start paying attention. Because, as this security footage shows, cats apparently have a sense for that kind of thing. This footage was take at the Cat Café Catchy in Japan, when an earthquake struck Osaka in June. Moments before the café started to shake, the cats seem to react to a loud noise or a thump. They jolt awake, looking around as if expecting to see what woke them from their naps. Then the building begins...

In the San Francisco Bay Area, more than 400,000 could be displaced in a magnitude 7 earthquake on the Hayward fault, which directly runs underneath cities like Berkeley, Oakland, Hayward and Fremont, said Ken Hudnut, the U.S. Geological Survey’s science advisor for risk reduction. And it’s possible that more than 250,000 people in Southern California could be forced out of their homes after a major earthquake on the San Andreas fault, Hudnut said. Not everyone will need to stay in public shelters — many will stay with relatives, friends and hotels. Still, more than 175,000 people may have no other...

When a catastrophic earthquake hits California, buildings will topple and potentially hundreds could be killed. But what gets less attention is the wrenching aftermath of such a huge temblor, which could leave whole neighborhoods torched by fires uninhabitable and hundreds of thousands of people without a home. Officials are grappling with where all these quake refugees would go. In the San Francisco Bay Area, more than 400,000 could be displaced in a magnitude 7 earthquake on the Hayward fault, which directly runs underneath cities like Berkeley, Oakland, Hayward and Fremont, said Ken Hudnut, the U.S. Geological Survey’s science advisor for...

This new Los Angeles Rams stadium better be good. We know it will be expensive, to a record level. Sports Business Journal reported that costs for the new stadium in Inglewood have passed $4 billion. You read that right. Stadium costs have gone way up through the years, but no other stadium in the United States has come anywhere close to this. SBJ said the most expensive stadium previous to this was MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, and that cost $1.7 billion. The Raiders’ new stadium in Las Vegas is expected to cost more than $2 billion. That’s still less...
  • Swarm of earthquakes hits seismically active region along California border

Dozens of quakes were reported in and around Ocotillo Wells in Imperial County, six of them larger than a magnitude 3, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The largest were felt in a scattering of locations in Imperial, San Diego and Riverside counties, according to the USGS. Seismologist Lucy Jones said on Twitter that the quakes were occurring along the southern end of the San Jacinto fault system...  Earthquake swarms are nothing new to Imperial County, which is one of more seismically active parts of California. 1979, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake sent violent shaking into El Centro, injuring 91...

Reuters picked up a quirky science story this weekend which caught my attention and it has to do with Yellowstone National Park. Steamboat Geyser, the largest “active” geyser in the world, erupted on Friday. The typical response should be along the lines of so what? It’s Yellowstone. The place is full of geysers. All true, except Steamboat also erupted on April 19th. And it erupted on March 15th. Still doesn’t sound unusual to you? Before that, the last time it erupted was in 2014. It’s a very inactive geyser. 2003 was the last time that it had three eruptions over...

Minor 'natural' quake near North Korea's closed nuclear test site By Park Si-soo A minor 2.3-magnitude earthquake was detected near North Korea's closed nuclear test site in Gilju early on Monday. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said the tremor took place at 4:31 a.m. 47 kilometers north-north-west of Gilju, North Hamgyong Province, at a depth of five kilometers. The tremor was believed to be natural, but could have been caused by the North's sixth underground nuclear test there in September, KMA officials said. Experts here have said the nuclear test weakened the underground structure around the site, leaving it vulnerable...

The 1906 San Francisco earthquake struck the coast of Northern California at 5:12 a.m. on April 18 with an estimated "moment magnitude" of 7.8 and a maximum "Mercalli intensity" of "XI" ("Extreme"). Severe shaking was felt from Eureka on the North Coast to the Salinas Valley, an agricultural region to the south of the San Francisco Bay Area. Devastating fires soon broke out in the city and lasted for several days. As a result, about 3,000 people died and over 80% of the city of San Francisco was destroyed. The events are remembered as one of the worst and deadliest...

Some movie goers may still be reeling after seeing some very rare footage of San Francisco around the time of the 1906 earthquake. A small crowd of people turned up at the Edison Theater in Fremont Saturday to view the premiere of a nine-minute film of the devastation. The footage from the San Francisco-based Miles Brothers film studio was discovered at the Alemany Flea Market last summer after being missing for more than a century. Anniversary of the quake, which destroyed much of Santa Rosa too, is Wednesday.

More than a century after San Francisco’s deadly 1906 earthquake, a film reel with nine minutes of footage capturing the city two weeks after the devastation surfaced at a flea market and it will soon be shown to the public, according to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle. The long-lost find portrays some of the city’s post-quake decimation, including City Hall with its dome nearly destroyed, the Chronicle said Saturday. Much of the city was flattened and thousands were killed in the so-called “Great Quake” and ensuing fire on April 18, 1906. The nitrate film reel discovered at San...

The last known survivor of the devastating San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906 died Monday. Bill Del Monte, who was 109 years old, passed away just after midnight at the San Rafael senior care facility where he lived, according to his family. He was 11 days shy of his 110th birthday. His niece, Janette Barroca of San Francisco, said he'd been doing "great for 109 years old." Del Monte was just three months old when the quake struck, forcing his family into the streets to escape in a horse-drawn buck board with fire burning on both sides, Barroca said....

John Vidale, director of the Southern California Earthquake Center, said the earthquake early warning system worked. At USC, he and others heard the alarm go off before they felt the shaking, “maybe 10 seconds ahead, enough for us to puzzle about it before the shaking hit.” “It was pretty widely felt across the USC campus. We only felt about 3 to 4 seconds, kind of a vibration, kind of long enough for it to sink in that it was an earthquake before it stopped,” Vidale

Parts of Britain have been struck by the country's biggest earthquake for 10 years. The British Geological Survey said the tremor had a 4.4 magnitude, with a depth of 7.4km, and the epicentre was about 20km north of Swansea. The quake happened just after 2.30pm on Saturday. A spokesperson told Sky News it was "reasonably-sized" and that the effects had been felt as far afield as Devon and Birmingham. "This is the largest earthquake in mainland UK since the 5.2 magnitude Market Rasen earthquake in 2008," he said.

A rookie golden labrador on his first ever mission has won praise for helping Taiwanese search and rescue workers find two people trapped in a severely damaged building following a deadly earthquake. Four-year-old Tie Hsiung, whose name translates to "Iron Hero", braved dangerous aftershocks on his first field test to search for survivors after a 6.4-magnitude quake struck the popular eastern tourist city of Hualien on Tuesday, killing 10 people. Thanks to the determined dog, one person trapped for 15 hours was finally located relatively unscathed and pulled from the wreckage of the precariously leaning Marshal Hotel. "The terrain was...
