TAIPEI — A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck near the coastal city of Hualien in Taiwan late on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, killing at least two people and causing several buildings to collapse. The quake struck about 22 kilometers (14 miles) northeast of Hualien shortly before midnight, and the epicenter was very shallow at just 1 kilometer, the USGS said. "Two people were unfortunately killed, and 114 have suffered light or severe injuries," Taiwan's Premier William Lai told an emergency government meeting. A number of aftershocks hit the area, but there was no word of any tsunami warning. Hualien...

Residents of southeast Michigan were left a bit shaken Tuesday night after a big bright flash lit up the sky and the ground beneath them shook. A flying saucer? No. A shooting star? Not quite. The National Weather Service eventually solved the mystery, tweeting "USGS confirms meteor occurred around 810 pm, causing a magnitude 2.0 earthquake."

Scientists have detected electromagnetic anomalies before major earthquakes, like the magnitude 9.0 event that struck Japan in 2011, triggering a massive tsunami that wiped out coastal communities like Ōfunato, shown above. Can electric signals in Earth’s atmosphere predict earthquakes? By Julia RosenDec. 21, 2015 , 1:45 PM SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA—Ask seismologists when they’ll be able to predict earthquakes, and the answer is generally: sometime between the distant future and never. Although there have been some promising leads over the years, the history of earthquake forecasting is littered with false starts and pseudoscience. However, some scientists think that Earth’s crust may give hints...

Roger Bilham, a geophysicist at the University of Colorado, Boulder, informed that, in this year, the planet would face more powerful earthquakes and the magnitude level will be 7.0 or more. It can even reach 9.0. He stated that the number of earthquakes could reach up to 20 in 2018. The published report says, when the planet will enter in to slow rotation period, that will decrease the centrifugal force and tighten the planet’s equator. After that, the tectonic plates will crush with each other. The force that will erupt from this event will start super earthquakes on Earth. The...

The micro-quake occurred about 1.7 miles northeast of the Punggye-ri nuclear site in the country's northeastern province of North Hamgyong, the Korea Meteorological Administration said on its website. "The quake is a natural one and it is believed to have occurred in the aftermath of the sixth nuclear test", it said. Minor tremors have been detected at the site since the North carried out its sixth and most powerful nuclear test underground in September, damaging geological structures in the area. An official of the Korea Meteorological Administration said: "Kilju is a rocky area where natural earthquakes normally do not occur....
