Japan has offered to build Australia a larger version of its ultra- stealthy 4000-tonne Soryu, or Blue Dragon, submarine to dramatically increase its range. The “enhanced” Soryu diesel-electric submarine, which could be built in Australia, would be powered by a new and safer generation of highly efficient lithium ion batteries developed by Japanese engineers. The 88m long Soryu would be extended with the addition of a new hull section 6-8m long, which would be placed behind the submarine’s fin, The Australian was told in a briefing yesterday. Japan, which is one of three contenders bidding to build Australia’s submarines, has...

POLICE have this morning arrested a student on his way to Arthur Phillip High School, the same school attended by the 15-year-old who shot a man dead at Parramatta’s police headquarters last week. Police say the teenager was spoken to by officers on his way to school when during the interaction the boy threatened and intimidated police, officers allege. The student claimed he was being arrested because police took offence at him videoing them, the ABC reported, however police say the boy was spoken to in relation to alleged posts made on social media. The arrested student had allegedly published...

POLICE are working on the theory that teen terrorist Farhad Khalil Mohammad Jabar was acting on the orders of other radicals and was not a “lone wolf" killer. NSW counterterrorism officers are investigating who may have supplied the gun he used to carry out the brutal murder of a civilian staffer at Parramatta police headquarters on Friday afternoon. “The possibility the teenager was used by extremists is a strong line of inquiry,’’ a senior officer involved in the operation told The Daily Telegraph. “That includes searching his computers, electronic devices and who he was in contact with on the days...

COULD Tony Abbott make a comeback? The Abbott-haters and the feral army of Twitter addicts who are so delighting in his downfall will pour their usual bile-laden scorn on such a suggestion, but they clearly don’t know their history. Political precedent tells us that Abbott returning to the leadership of the Liberal Party is not only possible, but worth punting a few bob on. Forget Abbott’s current unpopularity, because the public soon will. John Howard was publicly derided after he lost the 1987 election to the charismatic Bob Hawke, so much so that the Bulletin magazine, the trendy political rag...

LAST Friday morning — just before Curtis Cheng was murdered — Malcolm Turnbull revealed he would be more sensitive in tackling terrorism. Gone would be “the blunt and often divisive language used by his predecessor Tony Abbott”, The Australian reported, clearly briefed by our new Prime Minister or his team. Abbott’s rude talk had just “alienated many in the Islamic community”, and “Mr Turnbull will adopt a new, more inclusive tone”. This was just what the media Left had claimed to want when it was looking for excuses to kick Abbott. How those journalists had savaged Abbott for what they...

They really are coming for your guns . . . After the Charleston church shootings, President Obama praised Australia's draconian gun laws, which included a mandatory buy-back program, AKA confiscation. On today's Morning Joe, Mika wondered "why" we couldn't institute a similar gun ban in the United States, throwing in support for a database of all gun ownership for good measure. Joe Scarborough was actually obliged to explain to Mika that her gun ban was never going to happen because we have the Second Amendment here. That left Mika grimacing in regret [see the screengrab]. Redflex red light cameras and speed camera deployments have dropped by half as municipalities reject automated enforcement. Only a few years ago, Redflex Traffic Systems was at the top of its game. Stock analysts saw unlimited growth potential in the Australian firm that once operated more red light cameras and speed cameras in the United States than anyone else. Redflex was so confident about its bright future that it rebuffed Macquarie Bank's 2011 buyout offer at $2.75 a share. Today, Redflex trades at 24 cents per share, a top executive has been found guilty on federal corruption charges and the...

The Federal Government is set to announce it will spend $1.3 billion on new light armoured personnel carriers for the Army. The Hawkei vehicles will be manufactured by Thales Australia in Bendigo and will replace part of the Army's ageing Land Rover fleet. The Hawkeis are classed as "light protected mobility vehicles".

The Australian government’s focus on national security and the war on terror to tackle Islamic extremism, rather than social cohesion and inclusion, has helped create an environment for radicalized Muslim youth to emerge in disproportionate numbers, experts say.Authorities in Australia are grappling with a rise in violence perpetrated by teenagers at home as well as battling to halt the flow of those who are attempting to travel to Syria to fight with Islamic extremists. The murder of a police accountant in Sydney on Friday by a boy of Iraqi-Kurdish descent is the latest in a spate of attacks linked to...

When President Obama spoke in reaction to the heinous October 1 attack on Umpqua Community College, he went beyond his usual calls for more gun control and suggested instead that America consider following the path blazed by Australia and Great Britain. In the mid-1990s Australia and Great Britain both instituted what were virtually complete bans on firearm possession.Obama referenced the bans thus: We know that other countries, in response to one mass shooting, have been able to craft laws that almost eliminate mass shootings. Friends of ours, allies of ours — Great Britain, Australia, countries like ours. So we know...

Chilling footage has emerged showing the final moments of a 'radicalised' 15-year-old after he stormed a police headquarters and shot an accountant at point-blank range in an 'act of terrorism'. Schoolboy Farhad Jabar Khalil Mohammad can been seen running down the street brandishing his gun in the air just seconds after killing father-of-two Curtis Cheng, 58. Dressed in a black robe, the lone gunman can be heard screaming at officers before having a shoot-out with three special constables guarding the station in Parramatta, Sydney. Multiple shots can be heard and the Channel Seven video then shows the Iranian-born youth, who...

On October 2–just one day after Obama suggested an Australian-like gun ban might be the way forward for America–a gunman opened fire outside a daycare by State Crime Command in Sydney, Australia. Fox News reports “at least two are dead.” Details are scant, but The Sydney Morning Herald reports that “the gunman, who one witnessed said was dressed in a black gown, opened fire on a police IT worker outside the State Crime Command, which houses some of the state’s top detectives, in Parramatta at 4.35pm on Friday.” Parramatta real estate agent Edwin Almeida heard shots and looked out the...

Within hours of the gunfire falling silent on the campus of Umpqua Community College in Oregon Thursday, President Obama stepped up to a podium and declared that America should follow the path of our Anglosphere cousins to reduce gun violence. “We know that other countries, in response to one mass shooting, have been able to craft laws that almost eliminate mass shootings,” the president said. “Friends of ours, allies of ours — Great Britain, Australia, countries like ours. So we know there are ways to prevent it.” “Australia” is Obama’s preferred euphemism for that most cherished of gun-control ideals:...

The shooter at the centre of the Parramatta police HQ terror attack was a 15-year-old boy from Iran. The 'radicalised' youth gunned down police finance department employee and father-of-two Curtis Cheng at close range before being killed by a police officer. In a press conference with New South Wales premiere Mike Baird, Police commissioner Andrew Scipione confirmed the teens actions were 'politically motivated and therefore linked to terrorism'. En route to the killing the youth, originally from Iran, had visited Parramatta Mosque, The Daily Telegraph reported. Witnesses of the attack on Friday afternoon said after the killing, the teen paraded...

A lone gunman shot dead a civilian police IT expert at close range outside a force headquarters in a targeted attack today which has been described as a 'brutal' and 'callous murder'. Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said the civilian employee was 'simply leaving work' when he was shot in the back of the head by the gunman who was wearing 'dark trousers and a flowing top'....
