Durham, N.C. — Charges for three people who are accused of toppling a Confederate monument in downtown Durham have been dropped, according to their defense attorney. According to defense attorney Scott Holmes, charges were dropped against Aaron Alexander Caldwell, Myles Spigner and Taylor Cook, citing that probable cause exists, but there was not enough evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. On Aug. 14, a group of protesters tore the statue of a Confederate soldier down after a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., ended with one woman dead and almost two dozen injured.

Austin Mayor Steve Adler announced he will not participate in this year’s Veterans Day Parade, held Saturday on Congress Avenue, because some groups signed up to march will be carrying the Confederate flag. “Veterans Day should only be about honoring United States Military Veterans,” Adler said in a statement Thursday morning. “Symbols of racism, Civil War secession, and white supremacy should not be forgotten or erased, but they need to be remembered and studied in museums and classrooms not cheered and applauded in parades.”

WASHINGTON — Fairfax County Public Schools, the largest public school system in the D.C. region, is asking for financial donations to help cover the substantial costs associated with renaming J.E.B. Stuart High School in Falls Church, Virginia. Following a vote to rename the school last week, county officials set up a website, asking people to send in money. A church attended by George Washington will take down a memorial to the nation's first president, a move church leaders say is intended to make the place of worship more welcoming. In a bid to stop people from removing the tarps over Charlottesville’s Confederate statues, city officials placed plastic fencing around the monuments, forbidding anyone from crossing the barriers.
