WASHINGTON Fairfax County Public Schools, the largest public school system in the D.C. region, is asking for financial donations to help cover the substantial costs associated with renaming J.E.B. Stuart High School in Falls Church, Virginia.
Following a vote to rename the school last week, county officials set up a website, asking people to send in money.
So far, the effort has generated more than $8,000.
Officials said any donations will help with name-change expenses, which otherwise would need to be covered entirely by county taxpayers.
The full cost of changing the schools name is expected to be somewhere around $1 million.
All donations received will be used toward the costs of renaming J.E.B. Stuart High School to Justice High School, officials wrote on the site.
Funds raised in excess of the actual costs of renaming will be used to support student programs and services at Justice High School.
Officials added that donations are tax deductible.
After years of debate, a nearly four-hour session by the Fairfax County School Board Oct. 26 lead to a decision on what to call the school, which had been named after a Confederate general.
Board members voted 7-4 in favor of renaming the school Justice High School.
Sandy Evans, a board member from the Mason district, said using the word Justice would be a good way to honor Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, Barbara Rose Johns, Louis Gonzaga Mendez Jr. and all those who have fought for justice and equality.
Johns was a Civil Rights leader and Mendez was a U.S. Army officer who joined Virginias education department.
Evans said the controversial renaming process was the hardest issue she has faced in her eight years on the board.
The school name change will need to happen no later than the start of the 2019-2020 school year, and Superintendent Scott Brabrand is expected to announce a plan in the coming weeks on how to carry out the process.
Just-Us High School. Named after Obama and Holder, the racist duo who set America on a path to civil war.
Why is it always northern Virginia?
How about a fund to contest this at every stage, to investigate every member of the School Board who voted for it and to confront them and all they hold dear in their everyday life. This is a war. Fight them as they try to eradicate history.
What a waste of money....
Whatever school board members came up with this need to be gone.
Everything libs touch, they totally destroy....everything.
A new sign on the building will cost $1 million?
Yes. ComDem Insanity!
This area (NOVA) is now completely infested with SJWs and refugees from high-tax NE states.
This small geographic area can now turn VA blue in most any election.
When I moved here in 2000, it was still a nice area.
A fool and his money are soon parted.
I wonder if the Justice Brothers will be invited to give speeches at the unveiling of the new school
I just sent this story to Rush and how the school is pleading for $$ to do the name change. Maybe he’ll mention it today.
because very few true Virginians live there. Most are transplanted northerners from NY/NJ.
How much $ have those Hollywood alums pledged?
Cool! They are renaming the school to honor Chief Justice Roger B. Taney!!!
If we are going to deny history such as the Civil War, can we also deny slavery existed?
Had I known moving away from Fairfax County 20 years ago, would have made such a big difference... I still would have left.
