When Carletta Griffin heard Donald Trump call Saturday from the pulpit of a black church for a “civil rights agenda for our time,” she heard a man talking from the heart, with affection for her community.

“What he said sealed the deal for me,” Griffin, 41, an adjunct professor at the University of Detroit Mercy, said while leaving the Great Faith Ministries International where the Republican presidential nominee received a warm welcome – and even a prayer shawl – as he delivered brief, scripted remarks and quoted Scripture.

On Saturday, Donald Trump will head to Detroit to meet with local black leaders following a trip to another predominantly black community in North Philadelphia. While Mr. Trump has been making a pitch to black voters on the stump, the events kick off what will be the first serious concerted effort by a Republican presidential candidate in at least a decade. Mr. Trump on Friday sat down with African American elected officials and clergy at a charter school in Philly to discuss the cost and accessibility of healthcare, the impact on the black community from immigration and criminal justice reform....

Media doesn’t quite know what to do with the prayer shawl — and standing ovation — the GOP nominee received following his speech to an historically black church in Detroit. Donald Trump spoke at the Great Faith Ministries Church in Detroit on Saturday. The church was super happy to have him here… Everybody did really enjoy his speech. Donald Trump ended with a bible verse: I’d like to conclude with a passage from First John, Chapter 4: You know it! You see most groups I speak to don’t know that. But we know. If you want we can say it...

Al Sharpton wasn't all that impressed by Donald Trump"s black outreach efforts with a visit to a Detroit church today. He said on MSNBC this afternoon that Trump "blew an opportunity" to lay out a clear vision of his agenda for the black community in an ideal forum for that. And with Trump talking about communities learning from each other, Sharpton said, "Harlem is on the same island as Trump Tower. What have you gone up there and learned?" He argued that it sounds like Trump is "just discovering" what black people need but not actually outlining specific policies for...

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump made an appeal directly to African-American voters while speaking at a black church in Detroit on Saturday and said they are 'God's greatest gift to our nation.' The billionaire traveled to the city for a special service at the Great Faith International Ministries church along with Dr. Ben Carson and Omarosa Manigault, his director of African-American Outreach. Trump vowed that if he was elected president he would bring jobs back to impoverished black communities. His latest trip comes amid criticism that Trump has yet to bring his message into black communities across America, after weeks...

In the weeks since Donald Trump began making an overt appeal to African-Americans, one of the greatest criticisms he has received is that his appeals are made before largely white audiences. This weekend, Trump is addressing those concerns head-on, traveling to Detroit, Michigan, to attend a black church service and interview with the presiding bishop. He will attend the Saturday service at Great Faith International Ministries and will also participate in an interview with Bishop Wayne Jackson that will air on Jackson’s Impact Network. This is the first time that Trump has attended a black church during this cycle. Conversely,...

A national talk show comedian's 18-minute takedown of the nationwide charter school movement concluded the schools have been allowed to “run wild,” based in part on financial scandals. The segment from HBO’s Last Week Tonight With John Oliver was applauded by the Washington Post, Rolling Stone and many other news outlets. But critics of Oliver’s pseudo-serious tirade say he cherry picked incidents from around the country – some as far back as 2000 – to portray a charter school movement with little or no oversight. At one point Oliver talks about a charter school in Philadelphia that was under new...

In a previously little-noticed video from February at the Clinton Global Initiative, former President Bill Clinton suggested that the U.S. use Syrian refugees to rebuild Detroit. “The truth is that the big loser in this over the long run is going to be Syria. This is an enormous opportunity for Americans,” Bill Clinton said about the Syrian migrant crisis.

It has become known as a mecca of violent crime and poverty, and now a viral video is giving an unpleasant view of Detroit after dark. The clip, called Driving through Detroit at night, was filmed by a woman who was a passenger in a car going around the Motor City and was posted to Twitter at the weekend. It shows terrifying scenes of gangs gathered on the sidewalk, prostitutes lifting up their skirts and dancing, and even a man being run over by a car on purpose.

Yesterday was the annual world famous car cruise that runs for miles along Woodward Avenue through multiple Detroit suburbs. Officially just a one day event on the 3rd Saturday of August, in reality it’s a weeklong event that begins the weekend before. Vintage cars can be seen all week cruising up and down the strip, culminating in an endless parade on Saturday of approximately 45,000 cars from around the country and attracting about a million spectators.Aside from a few fender benders I’m unaware of a single outbreak of violence. Talk about making America great again! What’s your favorite car from the...
