Accused Florida airport gunman Esteban Santiago had his guns seized twice by authorities before the Jan. 6 massacre, including a reported confiscation four years ago in Puerto Rico – but on both occasions investigations were closed and Santiago’s guns were returned to him. Santiago, 26, had a gun or guns taken by Penuelas police in Puerto Rico more than four years ago, The Florida Sun-Sentinel reported on Friday, though the reason for the action wasn’t immediately clear. “It had to be some kind of complaint,” police press officer Edward Ramirez said.

Does anyone know how Medicaid handles the disposal of property they have retained against medical bills by a deceased person? I have been trying to buy some property from a gentleman who ended up in a nursing home with Medicaid coverage. His widow said she had to sign papers and was not allowed to sell or even rent the property.

Atheist activist, Green candidate Rob Sherman dies in plane crash Rob Sherman, who died over the weekend in a crash of his small plane in Marengo, operated a business helping people build aircraft from kits. But the 63-year-old was better known as a colorful political activist and Green Party candidate — some might say gadfly — who called journalists and introduced himself as “Rob Sherman, your favorite atheist.” At one time, he had license plates that spelled out ATHEIST. Though he came in for derision as a self-promoter, he challenged the use of government-sponsored Christmas creches and displays and anything...

Complain if you will about the fat pension plans which state and federal government workers receive, but after a lifetime of dedicated service it’s a great way to ensure your security in your golden years. Such was the case for Martin Petschauer, an auditor for New York State who put in a long career toiling away for the state and then retired, collecting his pension benefits until October of last year. This was actually quite the feat, particularly when you consider that Martin had passed away before Barack Obama was elected President. (Fox News) A Florida man has been...

It seems we have something more to be thankful for the day after Thanksgiving! On November 25th, 2016 after ruling over the poor people of Cuba for 57 years, Fidel Castro, AKA El Jaffe, El Commandant and the butcher died and entered eternity Godless and Christless as he lived and reigned. Former President Jimmy Carter had kind words for Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, who died Friday, saying in a statement he and his wife “remember fondly our visits with him in Cuba and his love of his country.” Castro, who was 90, was long a scourge of the U.S. who brought the Cold War to America’s doorstep. But he and Carter, a Georgia native, had warmer relations. Carter took a step to normalize relations between the two nations during his presidency, and the two shared several visits, including a 2011 journey where Castro called Carter a “friend.”

Sir Roger Penrose is a highly respected English mathematical physicist, mathematician and philosopher of science. He received the 1988 Wolf Prize for physics, which he shared with Stephen Hawking for their work in showing the necessity for cosmological singularities. But this brilliant scientist didn't stop there. Penrose is now convinced there is human consciousness beyond the grave, and his conclusion is based upon scientific evidence. As reported by Sean Martin, Penrose "believes he and his team have found evidence that protein-based mircotubules — a structural component of human cells — carry quantum information stored at a sub-atomic level. Sir Roger...

Nothing is certain but death, taxes, and Obama whining President Obama has no intention of fading away as Republican presidents typically do when they leave office. Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush completed their presidencies and were then more or less silent on their successors’ performance in office. However, Democrat former presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton are constitutionally incapable of shutting up and Americans have long suffered their bloviations.

A Funeral Sermon Designed to Teach on the Last Things and Inspire Prayer Msgr. Charles Pope • November 16, 2016 • In Monday’s post, I discussed some of the more common problems with funerals; it provides background for the homily I summarize in today’s post. In it, I tried to teach on what I think are the central themes that should be emphasized in Christian funerals. I do not necessarily preach every word you see here at every funeral, but I do address these basic themes. The homily I typically give at funerals is broken into three main parts: Praise...

Americans are still signing up for Obamacare, despite President-elect Trump's promise to repeal it soon after he takes office. More than one million people selected plans for 2017 on the federal exchange in the first 12 days of open enrollment, which began November 1, according to the Department of Health & Human Services. That is 53,000 more than in the comparable period a year ago. Administration officials are using enrollment data to promote the importance of Obamacare to Americans, trying to counter Republicans' assertions that it is pricey and broken.

Love of the World Fuels the Fear of Death – A Meditation on a Teaching of St. Cyprian Msgr. Charles Pope • November 15, 2016 • As November winds down and Advent still looms, the traditional meditation we make on the four last things (death, judgment, Heaven, and Hell) is still operative. A classic writing by St. Cyprian comes to mind. It is a meditation on the fundamental human struggle to be free of undue attachment to this world and to have God (and the things waiting for us in Heaven) as our highest priority. In this meditation, St. Cyprian...

Westerners who understand Islamic deception often refer to “taqiyya” as being the tactic of lying... Sunni Muslim apologists counter that taqiyya is a Shiite doctrine, while accusing Shiites of being rabblerousers who sanction “mut’a” (pleasure marriage), which is nothing more than prostitution. Shiites can easily find equivalents to taqiyya and mut’a in the Sunni Muslim world. They are called “misyar” and “muruna.” While Westerners cringe at .. religiously sanctioned prostitution like mut’a, they are less familiar with the Sunni-sanctioned misyar, which literally means “the traveler's marriage.” ... Misyar was first made legal in Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Sunnis who approve...
