A new image just released by NASA confirms what the space agency has said all along: That's no face on Mars. It's just a rocky mesa. On July 25, 1976, Viking Orbiter 1 sent back an image taken while orbiting over the Cydonia region of Mars. Since then, controversy has surrounded the interpretation of that image, commonly referred to as "the Face on Mars." On April 11, 2007, NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab and the HiRISE team for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter released a new picture of the "Face on Mars," a super high resolution image taken by the Mars orbiter. The Mars Express probe has photographed the classic surface feature on the Red Planet's surface known as "The Face". The mountain, which looks just like a human head with eyes, mouth and nostrils, was first pictured by the US Viking 1 Orbiter in 1976. The formation instantly became the stuff of myth and conspiracy theories, with some claiming it was evidence of an ancient Martian civilisation. This image was taken on May 5th of 2004, but just released to public viewing on April of 2005.
