  • Newly-discovered ancient crab species is like nothing science has seen before

When researchers discover fossils of species that are new to science it’s only natural that they attempt to find a place for them in the colossal tree of life, matching them up with related species that may even exist today. A newly-discovered species of ancient creature is pushing that practice to its absolute limit. Tiny fossils discovered in both Colombia and the United States reveal the existence of a pint-sized marine animal that lived some 90 million years ago. It’s being called a crab, but the researchers who discovered it are quick to point out how dramatically different it is...

While a number of businesses are welcoming customers carrying firearms, a Louisiana restaurant has taken it a step further – offering an incentive to gun-toting diners. Bergeron’s Restaurant, located in Port Allen, is offering a 10 percent discount to any patron packing heat, according to local affiliate NBC33.

TAMPA — It was all over a crawfish. The 30 BB gun shots, the lockup in the "Kitty Penitentiary" and a cat's abandonment in McKay Bay followed Mittens' consumption of a pet crustacean. Details of an animal abuse case that horrified the community last month came to light Wednesday in a Hillsborough County courtroom, where investigators sought to keep the former cat owner and her boyfriend away from animals for good. County Judge Nick Nazaretian ruled that Mildred "Missy" Krack, 26, can never have another pet in Hillsborough. A hearing for her 19-year-old boyfriend, Giovanni Estrada, who has been charged...

New Orleans - Sam Uglesich grew up among mariners and fishermen off the coast of Croatia on rocky Dugi Otok, whose name means "long island," surrounded by the azure waters of the Adriatic. Twice he set out for the United States. The first time, he jumped ship in New York, but was caught and sent home. The second time, he made his break in New Orleans, then as now a more permissive city, and got away with it. Naturally enough, he opened a seafood restaurant in his adopted city, specializing in the local shrimp, soft-shell crabs, lake trout and oysters....
  • Louisiana crawfish wreaking havoc in France's wetlands

You'd think that a country that has elevated snails and frogs to a delicacy wouldn't have a problem with some good ol' crawfish. Yet France is struggling, not in the kitchen but out in the wild: Beaucoup crawfish are killing frogs, destroying sensitive wetland plants and generally wreaking environmental havoc. The prolific Louisiana Red Swamp crawfish, which can lay up to 750 eggs at one time and can reproduce nine months of the year, is thought to have escaped into wetland areas of France in 1976. It's been downhill from there. "The Louisiana crawfish eats all the aquatic plants in...

I tried to post an excerpt from The Independent, a UK online Newspaper. The article, which related to the "rampant Louisiana crayfish" nibbling away at the French Coast ticled me. However, the excerpts from the article would not post. I was informed that there are copy right contentions with the Brit paper. The article is easily "Googled". How did I find the article? Well, I checked out the DUmmies site. They had a link. Why is there no copyright infingment contention by the Independent against the DU?
  • LOUISIANANS CAUSE HAVOC IN CENTRAL ITALY

It’s open warfare as Italians in North Central Italy say they will never stop fighting the Louisiana invaders. “All of Tuscany is under siege,” one local farmer told me. “We wish they would all go back to Louisiana.” What’s this villain assaulting this beautiful part of Italy? Killer Crawfish!! That’s right. Louisiana crawfish. Apparently, around 1990, a local farmer imported these bayou crustaceans with the hopes of offering a hardier and meatier shellfish than similar mudbugs that were being raised in Spain and other areas of Europe. And like the explosive spread of nutria in south Louisiana, crawfish expanded quickly...

10:42 A.M. EDT THE PRESIDENT: Thank you all for coming. It's been my honor to welcome the leadership of the United States Congress here, to welcome them back from the August recess. We talked about a variety of issues -- talked about the defense appropriations bill, and terrorism insurance, and an energy bill. Spent most of our time talking about a serious threat to the United States, a serious threat to the world, and that's Saddam Hussein. One of the things I made very clear to the members here is that doing nothing about that serious threat is not an...
