The two candidates for governor of California — Gavin Newsom, the Democratic lieutenant governor, and John Cox, a Republican business executive — met on Monday for their one and only scheduled debate of the campaign. (We will take what we can get.) Here are a few things we learned from their civil 60-minute session moderated by the journalist Scott Shafer on KQED, a public radio station in San Francisco. It’s rare that you have two candidates who disagree so completely on so many things. On sanctuary cities (Mr. Cox opposes, Mr. Newsom is a yes); the gas tax (Mr. Newsom...

According to a new poll, California's two biggest statewide races in 2018 are tightening, as the leads for front-runners Gavin Newsom and Dianne Feinstein have been cut to single digits. The poll, conducted by Probolsky Research between Aug. 29 and Sept. 2, found that Lt. Gov. Newsom leads Republican businessman John Cox 44 percent to 39, with 17 percent of the poll's participants saying that they are undecided. Additionally, the poll found that Sen. Feinstein leads progressive challenger Kevin de León 37 percent to 29, with a whopping 34 percent of participants undecided.

Two of California’s best-known Democrats are slipping in the polls as the calendar advances closer to Election Day. In fact, both Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein have only single-digit leads over their opponents, the results show. In the race for governor, a Probolsky Research poll, conducted between Aug. 29-Sept. 2, shows Newsom leading Republican businessman John Cox by a mere 5 points, with 17 percent of respondents undecided, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Feinstein faces similar problems, with the poll showing her with only an 8-point advantage over progressive challenger Kevin de León. A quarter of...

Republican businessman John Cox, who stunned the political world last week by placing second in the California primary and securing a spot on the November ballot, said Monday that President Donald Trump will campaign for him in California. The Los Angeles Times reports: Republican gubernatorial candidate John Cox said Monday that President Trump would travel to California to campaign for him in his bid to defeat Democrat Gavin Newsom in the November general election. “Gavin Newsom is going to make this race all about President Trump. Well, you know what, I welcome it,” Cox told GOP supporters at a hotel...

Nobody ever called the sharp, luxury-loving, and canny-as-a-sewer-rat Willie Brown stupid. So it's worth paying attention when the 84-year-old former speaker of the California statehouse, former mayor of San Francisco, and political fixer who "made" his old girlfriend Kamala Harris into a senator warns his fellow Democrats that they may be in for a surprise with John Cox, the Republican who unexpectedly secured a second spot on the gubernatorial ticket for the November midterms, along with former mayor of San Francisco Gavin Newsom. In cold realist terms, Brown wrote in his San Francisco Chronicle column: Businessman John Cox is not...

The California Election 2018 primary has come and gone. It was real, and it was spectacular. Yes, I wrote that, as a beleaguered California conservative and Trump supporter. Election results worked out quite well in our favor and for the country as a whole. Was there a blue wave? Nope. More like a trickle, and the results portend a red resurgence of sorts. Perhaps a red wave will finally wash over the country and finish in the Pacific Ocean. For the past 8 years, from the Tea Party wave of 2010 to the present day, I watched with sad dismay...

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) — San Diego businessman Jon Cox may be the underdog in the governor’s race, but Republicans believe Democratic opponent and Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom is vulnerable because of his support for an unpopular tax. If there’s one issue that resonates with Republicans, it’s the repeal of the gas tax in California. On Wednesday, Cox made a point of blaming Newsom for the 12-cent hike at the pumps -- even though Newsom, as lieutenant governor, was not involved in the legislative vote. “He wants to defend the gas tax,” Cox said. “I'm leading the effort to repeal the...

Voters on Tuesday head to the polls for California's pivotal primary, which could help determine whether Democrats will gain control of the House in the November midterms. The Golden State is home to 10 of the most competitive House races in the nation, virtually all currently held by Republicans. The state is a key to the Democratic Party’s plan to net the 23 seats it needs to flip the House majority in November. But uncertainty abounds thanks to the state's "jungle primary" system, where the top two vote-getters advance to the general election regardless of party affiliation. The unusual dynamic...
  • Gavin Newsom and John Cox advance to November election in California's governor's race

CNN projected Republican John Cox will finish in the top two, and advance to the general election in the California governor’s race. Cox, a San Diego businessman, was endorsed by President Trump. Republicans feared they could be shut out of the governor’s race in November, which could have depressed GOP voter turnout and adversely affected the party's congressional candidates. Former Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was attempting a political comeback in the race, but will fall short of making the general election.

Sure, it’s just a primary. And the general election is five months away. But is that reason enough, in a state that has screamed its political resistance loud and clear, to sleep through an election? The answer, my fellow Californians, is yes. Andrew Hernandez, 30, told me he had not voted but he had the materials at home and might still cast a ballot. I asked who was running for governor. He thought for a moment, as if the answer might bubble up, but there was no fizz. “I couldn’t tell you,” he said. U.S. senator? Hernandez shook his head....

In the race for California governor, two Republicans have shunned the center and are running to the right in a bloody fight for a segment of the electorate that loves President Donald Trump and loathes Democrats who have proudly committed to being his foil. Democrats dominate California’s government and far outnumber Republicans in the state. But Assemblyman Travis Allen and businessman John Cox haven’t altered their messages to try to appeal to them in a June 5 primary where every registered voter can cast a ballot for any candidate. Eight years ago California voters rewrote the state’s election laws so...
