Willie Brown warns Dems they may be in for a surprise with Cox

Nobody ever called the sharp, luxury-loving, and canny-as-a-sewer-rat Willie Brown stupid.

So it's worth paying attention when the 84-year-old former speaker of the California statehouse, former mayor of San Francisco, and political fixer who "made" his old girlfriend Kamala Harris into a senator warns his fellow Democrats that they may be in for a surprise with John Cox, the Republican who unexpectedly secured a second spot on the gubernatorial ticket for the November midterms, along with former mayor of San Francisco Gavin Newsom.

In cold realist terms, Brown wrote in his San Francisco Chronicle column:

Businessman John Cox is not to be underestimated. Coming out of the gate in the general election campaign, Cox is looking more in tune with many California voters, both in substance and style, than Newsom.

Newsom is clearly a celebrity, and he was acting like one during his "Governor Newsom" victory stroll through the Ferry Building the day after the primary. Cox comes across much less as a polished politician and more like the guy who would help you load your sport utility vehicle for a family weekend trip to Clear Lake.

In other words, Newsom looks like a wimp in his photos, as I noted here last week, and his supporters are showing an enthusiasm deficit, while Cox is a tough-as-nails competitor who's been rather mean to his fellow Republican, Travis Allen (who has yet to endorse him) and actually likes it when Democrats try to slime him with the "Trump" label. The more they holler "Trump" at Cox, the better he does.

Brown notes that the gas tax is a potent issue, and the fact that

Push the right buttons. There are 3-4 issues. Still the pretty boy will win.

The Dems have a few hundred thousand illegal votes as a cushion for Newsom.

It may be an interesting contest, putting a Republican in the statehouse. That would surely turn California politics upside-down.

Funny, Dems backing the very type of person they hate and protest. He’s rich, white, privileged, pussy grabber, an adulterer, etc. Everything the democrats claim to hate.

Kamala Harris was never Willie Brown’s girlfriend.
Willie Brown was married.
The most polite applicable term for Harris is “mistress.”

The illegal voters to which I referred are registered. They do not have to prove US citizenship to register.

A lesson these sneering idiots failed to learn with Trump's election.

That is how all the libs in Taxachusetts saved their state from themselves. Too wrapped up in their liberal identity to do it up and down the ballot.

But a succession of GOP governors—starting with a very good one in Weld, then an adequate one in Cellucci, trailing off to pathetic ones in Swift and Romney—was enough of a stop on their crazy legislature and they rolled back enough of the damage to bring the state back from the dead.

Could be what CA manages to do—and not that different than what we seem to have just barely pulled off with Trump at the national level.

“Newsom is clearly a celebrity, and he was acting like one during his “Governor Newsom” victory stroll through the Ferry Building the day after the primary.”

I doubt ‘ferry(s)’ make up more than 5% of the vote there. And beyond that, they can’t even spell their name right.

Good luck having that bunch carry you to victory.

“Push the right buttons. There are 3-4 issues. Still the pretty boy will win.”

Maryland is about as Democrat as California, yet the Republican governor there, Larry Hogan, not only got elected there, but is at 70% approval (among the highest for any governor). While he didn’t support Trump during 2016, he did attend the inauguration and didn’t make an ass of himself in opposing Trump.

Bottom line. Races for governor and US Senate are more determined by personality than party, and there are many, many, times people cross over (and often that works against us).

[ping to Tol to correct any of the above regarding Maryland]

Cox won’t win but this is the next step forward.
The fracture on Sanctuary Cities was the first.
Unlike the GOP-e, the way to bring CA back from the grave is to show CA voters that they are being used by those who desire power above all.

No, I’m afraid that here in California elections are determined by party rather than personality. Thirty years ago, a Cox would mop up the floor with a Newsom in California. But the state has changed so much in terms of demographics with the white middle class decamping to other states (primarily OR, WA, NV, AZ, CO, UT, NM & TX). Let’s face it, the white middle class is the GOP base. With it mostly gone, how can the GOP win statewide in California? It’s incredibly difficult and that’s why the GOP has been shut out of statewide office for the last decade. The Democrat coalition of affluent white liberals and Latino, Asian & black voters has proven to be a rock-solid combination in California and one that they’d love to implement nationwide (hence their immigration policies).
