Last month, April, 2018, the California Department of Justice raided prominent Kern County Farmer, Jeffrey Scott Kirschenmann. The justification for the raid was pictures the farmer had sent to the Department of Justice in an attempt to register a rifle. The DOJ claimed the rifle was an illegally modified “Assault weapon”.  During the raid, the DOJ confiscated 230 rounds of ammunition, a dozen guns, two objects claimed to be “silencers”, and some sort of trigger activator. There is reason to be wary of the accuracy of the claims of what was found during the raid. California law is very complex....

The Times Editorial Board tells us it’s obvious that easy access to guns results in more suicides and homicides, and there are 36,000 firearm deaths each year nationally. If we want to reduce that number, we have to make firearms less accessible. But look at the size of the problem: In our state alone, more than one-quarter of households own firearms. Initiative Petition #43 is slowly making its way through the ballot measure process in Oregon. After a massive response of challenges to the “draft ballot title” were submitted a couple of weeks ago, the state “attorney general” has now issued the “certified ballot title” that reads “Prohibits “assault weapons” (defined), “large capacity magazines” (defined), unless registered with state police. In Oregon, a new initiative from a religious group is taking it a step forward. They want to ban any semiautomatic rifle with a detachable magazine, and that can hold more than ten rounds. They also want current owners of these firearms, law-abiding Americans, to take them out of the state, register them, sell it to a FFL dealer, destroy it, or turn them over.
