The number of sleep deprived Brits has risen by 50 per cent in a year as people increasingly use smartphones and computers before bed. Nearly six in ten people in Britain now get seven hours of less sleep a night putting them at risk of cancer, diabetes and heart attacks, it has been warned. Academics at the University of Hertfordshire found that 80 per cent of people are making it worse by using technology before sleeping which exposes them to disruptive blue light. Blue light is present in morning light so late night gadget use can trick the body into...

  • Government-run UTOPIA is not good for Utahans

A new bill seeking to curb Utah’s government-owned broadband networks incited anger among observers, indicating confusion remains regarding the policy—and the state of broadband. Promoting broadband is in the public interest, but government-run broadband networks like Utah Telecommunications Open Infrastructure Agency—termed UTOPIA—are not the way to broadband paradise. In 2002, local government leaders commenced work on UTOPIA—the nation’s largest government-owned wholesale fiber operation—as a reaction to private telecommunications providers’ supposed unwillingness to make available high-speed broadband services. Altogether, 11 communities pledged approximately $500 million over several decades to back the bonds UTOPIA sold to finance network development. However, UTOPIA never...

Finally! I was without a computer all week last week and then found out frday that the old computer was beyond repair. I got this one for a good price and it seems a much better computer; videos play well for one thing. Right now there are only two problems: 1)Although I set up my two e-mail accounts on Outlook Express correctly and exactly as I'm supposed to, one of them refuses to work (fortunately, not my main one). The other one resolutely refuses to do so even though there is absolutely no logical reason for this. Also, this is...
  • The Tech Industry’s Immigration Lies: Is there really a shortage of high-skill American workers?

One of the primary narratives associated with comprehensive immigration reform has nothing to do with the millions of low-skill workers that would be granted an opportunity to compete against Americans for jobs. As a letter sent to the president and Congressional leaders signed by more than 100 chief executives of major tech companies and trade associations indicates, there is a shortage of highly-skilled American labor that drives reform as well. Yet as The Atlantic’s Michael S. Teitelbaum reveals, that narrative is a lie.“A compelling body of research is now available, from many leading academic researchers and from respected research organizations...

BlackBerry will not renew the license of T-Mobile US to sell its products when it expires later this month, the smartphone maker said. The announcement by the Canadian company comes after a dispute in February with the fourth-largest carrier in the U.S. for promoting Apple's iPhone 5s at a discount to its BlackBerry customers.BlackBerry CEO John Chen wrote in a blog post in February that like its loyal customers who expressed outrage to T-Mobile, the company was also outraged by the carrier's move. "What puzzles me more is that T-Mobile did not speak with us before or after they launched this...
  • Want to see at night? Here comes the infrared CONTACT LENS

University of Michigan boffins have created a tiny light detector that reaches into the infared, and is already small enough to be delivered as a contact lens. The key trick, the researchers say, is that they've created an infrared detector that doesn't need the cooling demanded by most devices that currently operate at the mid-to-far infrared wavelengths. As UoM assistant professor of electrical and computer engineerings Zhaohui Zhong says, the design can be built so thin that “It can be stacked on a contact lens or integrated with a cell phone.”The university's release explains that while the near infrared (that is,...
  • The Single Best Thing the FCC Has Done So Far This Year (or not)

Baby monitors, garage-door openers and cordless phones, are just a few of the innovations generated by the last time the Federal Communications Commission opened up untapped spectrum for public use. Get set for a whole new raft of innovative products--and faster download speeds. That's likely to be the upshot of a FCC decision Monday to free up a huge band of high frequency airwaves to unlicensed users. The Commission said it's opening a 100-megahertz swath in the 5-gigahertz, high-frequency range of communications network transmissions, which is bigger than the entire band of frequency that gave birth to Wi-Fi in the first place.And...

A Mexican teenager has been accused of brutally killing her best friend after she posted naked selfies of the two girls posing together on Facebook. According to police, Erandy Elizabeth Gutierrez, 16, allegedly stabbed 16-year-old Anel Baez 65 times during a fatal attack on March 19. Authorities believe that Gutierrez wanted to get back at Baez for posting the "humiliating" photos. When Baez asked Gutierrez to come to her home in Guamúchil in an effort to mend fences, her “sister” allegedly went to use the bathroom but instead grabbed a kitchen knife and carried out the killing. Gutierrez had been...

Google might not be a scrappy startup anymore, but despite being one of the biggest companies in the world, they have managed to hold on to a unique sense of humour and that's most apparent on April 1 every year. The company has a long tradition of April Fools' Day jokes, and different teams like Chrome and Maps and Gmail all come up with their own pranks so there's a lot to choose from just out of Google. Last year, more than a few people actually believed that Google Nose - a sniff search system - was a real thing....

Offering a preview of what future wearable medical devices may look like, researchers in Korea have built a skin patch that’s thinner than a sheet of paper and can detect subtle tremors, release drugs stored inside nanoparticles on-demand, and record all of this activity for review later. While still under development, the technology might someday be useful to sufferers of Parkinson’s disease or other movement disorders. “The system represents a new direction in personalized health care that will eventually enable advanced diagnostics and therapy on devices that can be worn like a child’s temporary tattoo,” says Dae-Hyeong Kim, assistant professor of...

Microsoft had become an oft-ignored, behemoth to the North, despite $77 billion in revenue, $57 billion in gross profits and $21 billion in net income. It seemed that the mobile revolution had passed it by. Although Steve Ballmer was already making many of the right moves, it took new CEO Satya Nadella to fully accept that Microsoft had to move beyond Windows into a new future of apps and cloud services. The future of Microsoft is in selling its software, such as Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Dynamics CRM and ERP, and Microsoft servers in the Azure cloud to business customers on...

Google confirmed over the weekend that its Domain Name System (DNS) service has been “intercepted” by Turkish ISPs after government orders to block Twitter.Software engineer Steve Carstensen revealed in a brief blog post that the web giant had confirmed with its own research previous reports about the Twitter ban which began on March 20th. Google’s DNS servers had been used by netizens in the early days of the ban to circumvent ISP-level censorship, with their address 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 even graffittied onto public buildings and daubed on election posters by Turkish protestors to spread the message. That avenue was soon closed...

I just downloaded IOS 7 on my iPhone, and I cannot stand it. It is draining my battery. I cannot delete messages or voicemails easily. The calendar function is difficult to navigate. I just plain don't like it. I tried to restore a backup, but that only restores contacts and music, not the firmware. Thanks.
