A federal judge today sentenced former city councilor and civil rights crusader Charles “Chuck” Turner to three years in jail for pocketing a $1,000 bribe while in office and then lying about it to the FBI. U.S. District Court Judge Douglas P. Woodlock sentenced Turner to 36 months this afternoon. The Harvard-educated Turner, 70, of Roxbury, was facing up to 35 years in the slammer for taking a wad of cash from Boston businessman Ron Wilburn during a 2007 “preacher’s handshake” in Turner’s district office. Boston City Councilor Chuck Turner was convicted today in a federal court in Boston on charges that he pocketed a $1,000 bribe in his district office in 2007 and later lied about it to federal agents who were interviewing him. A US District Court jury delivered its verdict this afternoon, just a few hours into its first full day of deliberations, finding Turner guilty of attempted extortion and providing false statements to FBI agents.

Embattled City Councilor Chuck Turner gave his first lengthy media interview to an unlicensed Grove Hall radio station that owes the federal government $17,000. Turner spent over an hour yesterday morning chatting it up with the “Wake Up Live Morning Crew” on TOUCH 106.1-FM. Turner was in the studio and took calls from listeners. Charles Clemons, who founded the 100-watt music station, said he asked Turner about the charges. “He said he is innocent,” said Clemons, who supports Turner.
