While Rep. Armando "Mando" Martinez (D - Weslaco) and his family celebrated New Year's Eve, a stray bullet — apparently fired by a reveler welcoming 2017 — struck the state representative in the head. "It felt like a sledgehammer hit me over the head," said Martinez, who called KGBT News from the hospital. After a few moments, Martinez and his wife realized he'd been hit by the bullet. They rushed to Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco. Doctors later transferred him to Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, where surgeons removed the bullet.

In the video, we see the man, stated as the father, shoot a celebratory shot into the air.  He briefly examines the pistol, which appears to be a Browning type single action of some kind.  He may have put on the safety, but it is not clear.  He then places the pistol down, probably on a chair.   We can see the young child moving toward the pistol as it is put down.   Link to video: In the video, the young boy picks up the pistol and seems to be trying to emulate his father.  The boys hands are placed...

Police now believe a bullet that killed a 7-year-old Chesterfield County boy was fired randomly somewhere within a 5,000-foot radius from the spot where the child was fatally struck while walking with his father July 4. Ballistics and federal firearms experts consulted by Chesterfield police believe the .40-caliber-class bullet was likely fired at a 55- to 70- degree angle and, based on that trajectory, the round likely traveled a maximum distance of about 5,000 feet, or just less than a mile, Chesterfield Capt. Chris Hensley said during a news briefing Monday. Hensley said the bullet that killed Brendon Mackey came...

Don't be a fool: Pumping bullets into the air on New Year's Eve is illegal, could put you in the slammer and could get someone killed. That's the annual reminder being sent out to the public by the city's top brass and by one victim of New Year's Eve stupidity who doesn't want what happened to him to happen to others. District Attorney Lynne Abraham and Police Chief Inspector Anthony DiLacqua are expected to make this announcement at a news conference today in the D.A.'s building with victim Joe Jaskolka, who was 11 when he was struck in the head...

Called my sister shortly before midnight. She said her husband has three guns loaded to shoot off for New Year's Eve. I don't approve of this. I told her to shoot the guns into the ground, not into the air. They followed my advice. When my nephew shot one of the guns into the ground he hit a water pipe. Now water is gushing out of the ground. Just desserts. What can I say?
