Need Help?
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) Authorities Tuesday issued a warning to residents ahead of New Years Eve festivities to not discharge weapons into the air.
The Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department warned revelers of their Zero Tolerance policy toward celebratory gunfire, which is a felony in California.
Deputies will be actively looking for anyone discharging a firearm in a negligent manner, authorities said in a department statement.
In Los Angeles County alone, celebratory gunfire has been blamed for dozens of deaths in the past three decades, according to KNX 1070′s Claudia Peschiutta.
Among them, the killing of 9-year-old Brian Perez in South Los Angeles.
Ive handled numerous homicides. Ive worked homicide for several years. And that one I remembered it because it stayed with me, said one LAPD sergeant.
Perez was killed in 1999 when a stray bullet fired into the air on the Fourth of July, striking him in the head.
It completely ripped that family apart and it was because of the negligent acts of somebody else who was probably just celebrating, not realizing that round has to come down somewhere, he said.
Local authorities report that there has not been a death linked to celebratory gunfire for several years, an indication that suppression efforts appear to be working.
Not even my shotgun?
Isn’t that a muslim thing? Oh, this may fall under the 1st amendment....
It’s only ok in CA if you are sad I guess.
It depends on what you’re shooting. An AK, probably not a good idea. But my XT-132 Atmospheric Cannon threatens no one but a couple of NSA satellites. Sorry, boys. Happy New Year!
Hey, this is written for Los Angeles.
Better write this message in Spanish, Ese!
NOW you tell us....
“dozens killed over the years” -—— Yup, But the great majority were killed by horizontal gun fire and not vertical gunfire.
Happy New Year!
What do they have against celebrities?
“At last, after two thousand years of research, the illudium Q-36 explosive space modulator. At last... “
A few years ago lapd bought equipment to trace gunfire especially on nye. I think it’s based upon triangulation. Anybody?
I’m sure it is.
Mexican Americans . . .
There is going to be FAR more than they can possibly hope to keep track of.
I had the opportunity to celebrate NYE in South Central back in the day. The volume of gunfire in the immediate vicinity was astounding.
Putting this warning out had better be in Spanish too. But then shooting their weapons into the air in celebration is part of Latino and also middle-eastern cultures so if they do it it’s Ok for diversity’s sake.
Not the I would ever have done such a thing.
The news on Spanish language stations in L.A. is very similar to that in English. Some of the outlets are owned by the same corporations.
As for who is doing it — see posts 14 and 16
