New Zealand’s recent announcement of a plan to eradicate all invasive predators, including feral cats, sparked an immediate response—and not in defense of the stoat, up there with cats among the top 100 on the Global Invasive Species list. “Cat murdering New Zealand[ers] are for the birds,” one commenter vented on The Washington Post’s website. “Removing cats from an area is a futile effort—one that cannot succeed,” another warned. When Australia announced a plan in 2015 to cull 2 million feral cats, the singer Morrissey declared them “2 million smaller versions of Cecil the lion.” The actress Brigitte Bardot called...

BROOKLYN — Attempt to regain your sanity as the election results roll in by cuddling up with some feline friends Tuesday night in Brooklyn Heights. The Brooklyn Cat Cafe, at 149 Atlantic Ave., will be hosting an election night “comfort” party from 8 p.m. to midnight. The cafe, where about a dozen adoptable cats roam free, will be screening the election results on a projector, as well as some funny cat videos interspersed throughout to “help reduce the tension,” a listing for the event said. The watch party is meant to bring a sense of humor to what’s been a...

Like many people, I needed a cat photo for my personal website. Lulu did the trick. She was puffy, orange and belonged to the ex-roommate of my sister’s boyfriend. Lulu — whose nickname is Luyoncé — vamped obligingly, and Lulu’s owner soon decided that her budding cat model required an Instagram account. That was just over six months ago. My website’s traffic has languished, but Lulu now commands nearly 40,000 Instagram followers. “Be the cute you wish to see in this world,” one post says. In another, she gloats from the bottom of a laundry hamper.

One tubby tabby cat has guests at a New Hampshire hotel ordering extra room service. The Best Western Silver Fox in Waterville Valley has a fat cat causing some folks to want to come back for another visit. Logan, is 8-years-old and 31 pounds, which is about triple the weight of an average cat. His owner says he loves hogging the attention and the meals of his brothers and sisters. "He has a funny little habit of licking each bowl, and then going back to his. I told you he's kind of a character," says Susan Brunvand, Logan's owner.

I recently lost my cat and have been thinking of getting another one. My niece, who is a vet, works with a cat rescue group that has a one year old female kitty with feline leukemia that they have been trying to find a home for and are even willing to waive the adoption fee in order to place her. So my question is directed to anyone here who has ever had a cat with feline leukemia. How long did your cat live with the disease, how was its quality of life, did you have to administer medication on a...

You’ve heard of ancient Egyptian cats. But Viking cats? Scientists studying cat DNA say that they found cat remains at a Viking site dating to between the eighth and eleventh century A.D. in northern Germany.

It is not a suggestion that is likely to go down well with millions of cat lovers. An American academic has recommended that all stray felines should be eradicated unless they can be found a home, because of the huge numbers of birds they kill. Not only that, but Dr Peter Marra, the director of the Smithsonian migratory bird centre in Washington, says all domestic cats should be kept indoors or on a lead to stop the “devastating impact” they have on wildlife.

First large-scale study of ancient feline DNA charts domestication in Near East and Egypt and the global spread of house cats. Thousands of years before cats came to dominate Internet culture, they swept through ancient Eurasia and Africa carried by early farmers, ancient mariners and even Vikings, finds the first large-scale look at ancient-cat DNA. The study, presented at a conference on 15 September, sequenced DNA from more than 200 cats that lived between about 15,000 years ago and the eighteenth century ad. Researchers know little about cat domestication, and there is active debate over whether the house cat (Felis...

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) – A dozen neighborhood cats have recently died or disappeared in downtown Arlington, and many business owners are turning to police for help because they suspect foul play. “These cats of Main Street had a home,” said Sarah Hughes, who works nearby. A long row of white crosses covers two streets along Main Street in Arlington. Each cross represents a feral cat that has either gone missing or has been found dead in recent weeks. Hughes stopped next to a cross with the word “missing” crossed out. It has been replaced with “R.I.P.” “This was one of our...

Do the animals we’ve loved and lost truly leave us? Earlier this week, Bel Mooney told of her grief at losing her dog, Bonnie, and how, at her lowest ebb, she felt Bonnie come back to her. In response, dozens of you responded with stories of signs from the after-life from dearly beloved pets . . . Eight years ago, I had a lovely black cat called Nevil. One afternoon a lady knocked on my door and told me she had run over my cat. For two weeks I was truly devastated. One night I could not sleep and went...

The Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot (1939) is one of most creative and fun collections of poetry ever written in the English tongue. With splendid illustrations by Edward Gorey, the book is very short -- only 56 pages. The genius of this collection of 15 playful poems on the adventures of anthropromophic cats is that Eliot beautifully describes the many "personalities" of cats -- and humans, for that matter. Reading this is a cat lover's must. These poems are part of our culture already: they inspired the Broadway musical CATS, for instance. And the...

The Ivanpah solar plant in Southern California killed 6,185 birds in 2015. That includes burning about 1,145 birds with the intense heat coming off its many mirrored heliostat panels, according to a recent report on the government-backed solar project. An audit of how many birds and bats Ivanpah kills every year found “there were an estimated 2500 fatalities from known causes and 3686 fatalities from unknown causes” last year. Of the known fatalities, nearly 46 percent were killed by the intense, concentrated heat used to generate electricity. Western EcoSystems Technology, the firm auditing Ivanpah, estimated about 1,145 dead birds have...

The feisty feline feud between the pets of Westminster continues to rage as the cats clashed in another violent showdown. Downing Street is no stranger to seeing egos battle it out for supremacy, but usually with a war of words than of claws and teeth. However, in recent weeks the epicentre of British politics has played host to running battles between Larry the Downing Street cat and his arch-nemesis Palmerston, who belongs to staff at the Foreign Office.

A third cat has joined Whitehall's increasing team of mousers with the arrival of Gladstone at the Treasury. The 18-month black moggie - who wears a red ribbon around his neck - is described as 'greedy' and an animal with 'catitude' - stoking fears he will join the increasingly bitter turf war between No 10's Larry and Palmerston from the Foreign Office. Like his new neighbours, Gladstone was recruited from Battersea Cats and Dogs Home, where he was called Timmy.

Eye balling one another across Downing Street like two boxers in a ring, the simmering feline feud between Larry and Palmerston shows no sign of abating. The two cats faced off today in their ongoing battle to be top cat in the corridors of power. Lorry, the Downing Street cat, made a triumphant return to the corridors of power on Monday after a bruising bout with his arch enemy from the Foreign Office last week. That scuffle saw the brown and white tabby suffer an injured right paw following a feisty brawl with Palmerston.

This cat may need to work on its hunting skills. The alarmed moggy was spotted keeping its distance as it watched a fight between two huge rats that were almost as big as him. Vile footage from what is believed to be a kitchen in Thailand shows the wary cat remaining apathetic as the rodents tussle furiously on the floor in front of him.
