I increasingly feel that feminism has failed my generation. It is a peculiarity of the West that it is divided into sets which differ profoundly in their beliefs. This state of affairs began with the Reformation and has grown more pronounced ever since. There were Protestants and Catholics who differed fundamentally not only on faith but on practical matters. It was among Protestant communities that feminism first emerged, and it is in Protestant countries such as America and Britain in which feminist beliefs have been at their most vocal and strident in tone, like a religion with no dilution of...

Here are five allegations bouncing around the internet that are definitely "alternative facts." MYTH 1: It's being funded by Democrats. Trump said at a campaign rally on Thursday that "a lot of money has been passing to people" traveling north from Honduras. A Republican from Florida, Rep. Matt Gaetz shared a short video that Trump later promoted of migrants being given cash and suggested that they were...

Julian Assange is launching legal action against Ecuador, accusing its government of violating his "fundamental rights and freedoms". It comes after Ecuador cut off communications for Mr Assange, who has been living inside the country's London embassy for more than six years. WikiLeaks claims Mr Assange's access to the outside world has been "summarily cut off" and says Ecuador has threatened to remove the protection he has had since being given political asylum. This investigation has been dropped, but Mr Assange fears he could be extradited to the US over WikiLeaks' publishing of huge amounts of classified information. Lawyers for...

I hear the same story, told in different ways, all over New York City. There’s 34-year-old Kate, who works in finance downtown. “She’s beautiful, smart, talented . . . everything going for her,” her colleague tells me. “But her boyfriend doesn’t feel settled in his career, so she spent thousands of dollars to freeze her eggs as she waits for him to be ready.

Society places such high importance on getting married that it’s easy to feel almost like a failure if you never manage to find a man to settle down with. While it’s fantastic if you do eventually find a guy you’d like to marry, it’s really no big deal if you never end up getting hitched as long as you have these things: 1. A solid group of friends It doesn’t matter whether your social circle is big or small — what DOES matter is the quality of the people in it. Even the most independent people need at least one...

A flight was diverted to Denver International Airport on Friday because of an unruly passenger who wanted to see her comfort cat. Passengers resumed their flight on Saturday after a 24-hour delay. A passenger on the flight to Germany from Las Vegas shot video of a clearly agitated woman, described at a European model, taken off the Condor Airlines flight that landed prematurely in Denver. The female passenger was reportedly demanding to be seated with her comfort cat. “That lady wasn’t happy with the crew putting their cat in the lavatory and then everything went wrong. She started screaming and...

Even though Kate Bolick makes a solid case for older women on their own, the tropes and mindsets of the past are hard to overturn. “You are born, you grow up, and you become a wife.” “But what if it wasn’t this way?” asks Kate Bolick, the author of Spinster: Making a Life of One’s Own. What if women did not have to worry about getting married, or agonize about when and if it will happen—two questions, Bolick claims, that will hound a young girl into her adult life, regardless of where she was raised, or her religious association. “Men...

The suspect was identified as Shanna Spalding, 28, of Queens, who sings with a death-metal band called Divine Infamy under her stage name, Purgatory. The burqa-clad suspect was picked up in SoHo after bursting into a Greene Street boutique with a gun and demanding cash, sources said. ...Cops said they had noticed her prior to the heist, and followed her to...

DUDLEY, Mass., Nov. 4 (UPI) -- A Massachusetts town outlawed owning three cats without a kennel license after a man complained his neighbor's felines were hurting his lawn. When Susan Boyle, fleeting star of Britain's Got Talent and the brief toast of the entertainment world, checked into a London clinic to cope with exhaustion and other fame-related maladies, it was not Simon Cowell who was ushered into her hospital room each day to sit on the edge of her bed and offer quiet consolation. That role was reserved for her roommate and closest friend, Pebbles. A 10-year-old cat. Pity the poor "cat lady." The term implies a single woman who is somehow defective and bound for eternal spinsterhood. It conjures up images of a lonely middle-aged biddy with...
