  • This iPhone-based ultrasound machine can detect cancer

    10/29/2017 12:52:54 PM PDT · by BenLurkin · 20 replies
Instead of vibrating crystals, Butterfly IQ uses "capacitive micro-machined ultrasound transducers", or CMUTs, tiny ultrasonic emitters layered on a semiconductor chip a little larger than a postage stamp. "The device gives you the ability to do everything at the bedside: you can pull it out of your pocket and scan the whole body," Martin said. The company now plans to combine the instrument with artificial-intelligence software that could help a novice position the probe, collect the right images, and interpret them. By 2018, its software will let users automatically calculate how much blood a heart is pumping, or detect problems...
  • Recurrent brain cancer: New hope with phase 1 clinical trial results

    10/28/2017 10:34:34 PM PDT · by libh8er · 10 replies
New data from a Phase I clinical trial shows more than a quarter of patients with recurrent high-grade glioma, a form of brain cancer, were alive more than three years after treatment. "Given the deadly nature of this disease, three-year survival is rarely reported in the recurrent setting. It is notable that the survival benefit was seen across a range of patients and not just limited to patients with specific genetic mutations," said Chen. "This finding indicates that many patients could benefit from this treatment." As Chen explained at the AACR-NCI-EORTC International Conference on Molecular Targets and Cancer Therapeutics two...

Legal and scientific ethics seem to have become irrelevant, as anti-chemical agitators, regulators and trial lawyers team up on numerous lawsuits against Monsanto. They’re seeking tens of billions of dollars in jackpot justice, by claiming a chemical in the company’s popular weed killer RoundUp causes cancer.A key basis for the legal actions is a March 2015 International Agency for Research on Cancer ruling that glyphosate is a “probable human carcinogen.” A previously little known agency in the World Health Organization (WHO), IARC has gained infamy in recent years – as critics slammed it for manipulating data and altering or deleting...
  • California judge tosses $417 million talc cancer verdict against Johnson & Johnson

A California judge on Friday threw out a $417 million verdict against Johnson & Johnson in a lawsuit by a woman who claimed she developed ovarian cancer after using its talc-based products like Johnson’s Baby Powder for feminine hygiene. The ruling by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Maren Nelson marked the latest setback facing women and family members who accuse J&J of not adequately warning consumers about the cancer risks of its talc-based products. The decision followed a jury’s decision in August to hit J&J with the largest verdict to date in the litigation, awarding California resident Eva Echeverria $70...
  • Breakthrough Finding: How Sugar Fuels Cancer Growth

The findings, reported in the journal Nature Communications, help unravel what has been a scientific mystery to medical researchers – precisely how sugar makes tumors grow faster. The new understanding could help lead to new ways to combat cancer, through diet and other modifications of sugar intake. The research team – led by Johan Thevelein, Wim Versées and Veerle Janssens – have been studying sugar’s link to cancer for nearly a decade. They, and other scientists, have determined tumor cells grow by rapidly breaking down glucose (a form of sugar) – a phenomenon known as the “Warburg effect.” But the...
  • Notice how Komen Foundation is NO LONGER MENTIONED during "Breast Cancer" month of October?

no link, just an observation.... open to correction...BUT. While October has been hyped in the media as a "pink" month, standing for breast cancer research, have you noticed that THIS year, the Susan G Komen Foundation--big Planned Parenthood funders--are NOT mentioned prominently? I wonder if SGK is still behind these efforts, but are choosing to mute its involvement. Recall a few years back many of us chose to STOP donating to Komen when the organization BACKTRACKED on a pledge to stop giving money to the abortion mills.

The president and director of Seattle's Fred Hutch Institute says cancer can be cured by 2025. Dr. Gary Gilliland made the claim while speaking at the Geewkire Summit at Seattle's Sheraton Hotel. It was part of a general discussion on technology as a way to reduce the rates of cancer. Gilliland said in particular genome sequencing costs are falling, and it has opened the door for personalized medicine and immunotherapy. He also says there have been advances and research, which has helped in preventive cures. Gilliland says HPV vaccinations for boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 13...

FULL TITLE: Heartbreak as three-year-old boy with terminal cancer dies one month after his town threw him an early Christmas because he was told he would not live to see the holidays A three-year-old boy whose fight with cancer prompted his small southern Kansas hometown to celebrate Christmas in September died on Saturday. Christian Risner's family announced his death on a Facebook page they established after the then-two-year-old was diagnosed with Rhabdoid kidney cancer in April 2016. When doctors said that he had three months to live, Christian's family decided to bring Christmas to him early this year with a...

The activator compound BTSA1 (orange) has bound to the active site of BAX (green), changing the shape of the BAX molecule at several points (shown in yellow, magenta and cyan). BAX, once in its final activated form, can home in on mitochondria and puncture their outer membranes, triggering apoptosis (cell death). Mention chemotherapy and most of us will cringe in horror at the thought of the dreaded side effects of this standard medical treatment for cancer. However, a new treatment without involving debilitating chemotherapy is on the horizon. According to a University of Hong Kong medical expert, this new therapy that kills cancer cells by boosting the body’s immune system is now undergoing human clinical trials and could well replace chemotherapy within a decade. Thomas Yau Chung-cheung, clinical associate professor at Hong Kong University, shared the progress of 200 cancer patients in the city who are undergoing this new immunotherapy treatment...

It's football night in Marietta and, if you look closely among the cheerleaders on the field, you'll see a young girl with distinctive purple close-cropped hair. She and the other cheerleaders are enthusiastic as they belt out a cheer, "Let's fight, let's fight!" It's an appropriate chant for 11-year old Emma Barrientos, who is personally in the middle of a fight against high-risk leukemia. She is thrilled to be well enough to be back on the football field with her friends, and her parents are smiling and watching her from the stands. Earlier this week, she was back at Jimmy...

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes (Romans 1:16a, NASB).“What makes you different?” Steve asked. “I’m a follower of Jesus Christ,” responded Sammy.” The Christian faith of one of the most popular and highly paid 1960s-70s actors is the fulcrum on which Steve McQueen: American Icon is balanced. Greg Laurie, pastor, author, and long-time McQueen fan, narrates the engaging and entertaining documentary that is coming to select theaters this Thursday, September 28, for one night only. Laurie was drawn to McQueen’s story largely because of...

WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. Sen. John McCain says doctors have given him a "very poor prognosis" as he battles brain cancer. McCain underwent surgery in July for a brain tumor that was later found to be a form of glioblastoma, the same type of cancer that took the life of his former Senate colleague Edward M. Kennedy in 2009. McCain tells CBS' "60 Minutes" in an interview that aired Sunday night that he thinks about Kennedy a lot. He says Kennedy continued to work despite the diagnosis and "never gave up because he loved the engagement."

The Government needs to invest more than €5 billion in additional beds, equipment and infrastructure as there is now clear evidence acute hospitals are “beginning to fail”, senior doctors have warned. In a submission to the Department of Health, the Irish Hospital Consultants Association (IHCA) said the system was experiencing ever-increasing waiting lists for essential surgery while there had been a “collapse” in the elective or non-urgent output in acute hospitals. It warned key targets in relation to cancer care were also now being missed. The submission, sent last Friday, said the waiting time prior to the commencement of chemotherapy...

About a third of the world’s population is chronically infected with the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggest that about 11% of the U.S. population aged 6 years and over is infected with the parasite, while in other countries the infection rate has been shown to be up to 95%. Researchers from 16 institutions across the U.S., Canada, England, Scotland, and Australia have now analyzed genetic, transcriptomic, and proteomic data from infected individuals, and from studies in cell cultures, to link T. gondii infection with a number of brain disorders,...

"We take a virus, learn how it works and then we leverage it," said Dr. Michael Diamond, a professor of molecular microbiology, pathology and immunology. "Let's take advantage of what it's good at, use it to eradicate cells we don't want. Take viruses that would normally do some damage and make them do some good." Researcher Zhe Zhu thought that glioblastoma stem cells, which stubbornly resist chemotherapy and radiation to regrow in most patients, looked a lot like the stem cells in a fast growing fetal brain. Since the Zika virus kills those fetal cells, maybe it would do the...

Former world featherweight champion Sugar Ramos, real name Ultiminio Ramos, has died at the age of 75 after a long fight from cancer. One of the first victims of the professional boxing ban in Cuba, Ramos moved to Mexico – where he later became an idol – to escape the communist regime of Fidel Castro in 1961. Two years later he challenged Davey Moore for the WBA and WBC featherweight titles, and it is the tragic outcome of that bout that became Ramos’ unwanted claim to fame.
