He’s less popular than Trump, his party is trailing in the polls, and he couldn’t afford facing the heat coming his way if he failed to cut a deal. It’s no secret that President Trump and Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau don’t get along. In June, as both nations threatened each other with tariffs during negotiations to rewrite the NAFTA trade deal, Trump tweeted that his 46-year-old Canadian counterpart was “weak” and “dishonest.” Trudeau responded by boasting that Canada “will not be pushed around” by its bigger neighbor. But three months later, both countries came together, along with Mexico, to...

Professor Jordan Peterson argued this weekend that Brett Kavanaugh should step down from the Supreme Court for a "less divisive" nominee to take his place, despite Peterson’s past advice to "never apologize to a mob."...The tweet came in response to a thread by former Evergreen State College Professor Bret Weinstein, who called Kavanaugh an "entitled punk."

Professor Janice Fiamengo, of the University of Ottawa, presents a brilliant analysis of the Christine Blasey Ford accusations against Brent Kavanaugh, the thrust of the values of Palo Alto University where Ford teaches, and the issue of this academic institution's highest values, political agenda, and hostile character assassination of men.

The China card was something Mexico and Canada were ready to play against the Americans when Donald Trump first came to power under a unilateralist banner of “America First”. Who knew how far this volatile and inconsistent leader in Washington was willing to go after he denounced the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) – which formed the basis of trade between the three countries for 24 years – as the worst trade deal in the history of his country? But when the three sides have finally agreed on a replacement trade pact – the so-called United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA)...

Ford Motor Co. will reorganize its salaried workforce worldwide, flatten its business operations and create a more efficient company that results in fewer white collar jobs, the Detroit Free Press reported. Ford has 201,000 employees globally, including an estimated 70,000 salaried workers, and is the largest car manufacturing employer in the U.S. The company didn't say how many jobs would be affected. The Dearborn-based automaker told employees about the plan on Thursday, the Free Press reported, saying the changes are part of trying to identify how the company can become stronger by limiting corporate bureaucracy and identifying weaknesses in all...

While the White House is progressing on trade deals with allies including Canada, Mexico, Korea and Europe, its dispute with China looks increasingly intractable, with tariffs between the world’s two largest economies likely cemented in place for years. In other trade fights, President Trump used tariffs as leverage to reach deals. Threatening car tariffs helped convince Canada and Mexico to concede to U.S. demands for a new North American Free Trade Agreement, the president boasted. “Without tariffs, we wouldn’t be talking about a deal,” he said Oct. 1 in the Rose Garden. China is different. Tariffs aren’t simply a negotiating...

The September jobs numbers are the 2018 United States economy in a nutshell: Even when an economic report is bad these days, it’s actually pretty good. When the latest numbers first were broadcast at 8:30 a.m. Friday, it looked like a big disappointment. Employers added only 134,000 jobs to their payrolls last month, well below the levels of recent months and well below what forecasters had projected. But even apart from the usual warnings about statistical error and randomness (the true rate of job creation could turn out to be either much higher or much lower), the numbers are a...

A man who was captured on camera Sunday violently kicking a female pro-life activist lost his job at a Toronto hair salon amid social media backlash, while the victim says she will pursue charges against him. Jordan Hunt has been identified as the culprit behind the attack after a video of him spin-kicking the woman went viral. He deleted his social media accounts after the backlash. In the video, he is seen approaching a group of pro-life activists and engaging them in a discussion about abortion before suddenly kicking an activist and ripping a Campaign Life ribbon off her jacket and fleeing...

OTTAWA — From the get-go, the Liberal government’s goal in rewriting NAFTA was to get a “progressive” trade deal for Canada that was “free and fair.” So did it? While there are lots of ways to tally the winners — and losers — in the new United States Mexico Canada Agreement, or USMCA, one is to look at the six objectives that Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland herself articulated on the eve of the renegotiation. [photo caption] As part of the trade deal with the U.S. and Mexico, Canada will ease protections on dairy. [photo credit: CHRISTINNE MUSCHI THE NEW...

Food banks around the country said they may not be prepared to execute the Trump administration’s plan to get additional billions in food to hungry Americans...Last month, the administration set in motion a $1.2 billion program to send food to the nation’s food banks as part of its wider effort to bail out farmers hurt by the president’s trade war. Local food bank officials said they are thrilled by the opportunity to feed more Americans who need help, but worry they will not be able to process all of the newly available agricultural products that could double or triple the...

OTTAWA - Canadian dairy farmers met Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday to discuss his politically-risky move to open up the protected domestic market to U.S. industry but complained he had not given them details about compensation. As part of the talks to complete the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) trade deal, Canada offered 3.6 percent of its dairy market to the United States. It also promised to fully compensate farmers for any losses they might incur. Trudeau held talks with members of the dairy lobby in Montreal to discuss their concerns. Farmers said afterwards they were not satisfied. “The...

""Pompeo Terminates Iran Treaty After UN Court Hands Tehran A Victory In Sanctions Lawsuit Against Washington"" Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Wednesday the U.S. will terminate a 63-year-old treaty with Iran, hours after a top United Nations court ruled in favor of Tehran in a lawsuit challenging U.S. sanctions. Pompeo said the abrogation of the 1955 Treaty of Amity was “39 years overdue,” referring to the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran that resulted in the overthrow of the U.S.-friendly shah. Until Pompeo’s announcement, the Treaty of Amity had remained in force even though Washington and Tehran have not had...

The sold-out Mark Steyn Club Cruise departed Quebec City just as a wild tsunami of an election result crashed on the Plains of Abraham and washed away the National Assembly. On Monday François Legault's brand new party, the CAQ (Coalition Avenir Québec), won 74 out of 125 seats and became the first government in half-a-century to be neither Liberal nor separatist. The CAQ is described as "center-right", but that term doesn't really cover it: Like many of the emerging parties in the new Europe - from Sweden to Italy, France to Hungary - M Legault concluded that the sweet spot...

I’m still going through the USMCA text (even speed reading, it will likely take a while); here’s the link to the AGREEMENT DETAILS. However, many people have asked about how the NAFTA loophole was being closed. Well, the answer is exactly what it had to be – there was really no option. The U.S. now has veto authority over any trade deal made by Canada and/or Mexico with third parties. This is what Ambassador Lighthizer described as the “Third pillar”. Last year, despite the inevitability of it, we didn’t think Canada and Mexico would agree to it. The NAFTA loophole...
