US President Barack Obama has said he will not allow jihadists to carve out a "caliphate" straddling Syria and Iraq. On Friday, the US began launching air strikes on fighters of the Islamic State (IS) in northern Iraq. Mr Obama said there would be further air strikes if necessary but no US military operation on the ground.

How long before the IS (ISIS) Caliphate is recognized as a legitimate government? It took ten years or so for negotiations to start with the Taliban. Turkey's defense minister on Saturday ruled out a Turkish military intervention against Islamic State fighters in Iraq, and said his country was not involved in U.S. airstrikes against the extremists near the Kurdish regional capital of Irbil. The Islamic State (IS), formerly known as ISIS, has launched an initiative to conquer land in Lebanon, even though the terrorist group does not have a strong presence there.
