Schumacher turns taxi driver to catch his flight Tue Dec 11, 9:34 AM ET Michael Schumacher can add the unofficial title of Germany's fastest taxi driver to his other achievements after taking over behind the wheel to get his family to the airport on time. The retired Formula One champion drove the cab back to the airport himself after a trip out to the village of Gehuelz, near Coburg in southern Germany, left the family short of time to make their flight home, the Muenchner Abendzeitung newspaper reported. "It was crazy having Schumi driving, with me in the passenger seat,"...

CENTRAL TRAINING AREA, OKINAWA, Japan (Aug. 4, 2006) -- Fifty-two Marines with Combat Assault Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, participated in military operations on urbanized terrain training July 26-27 at Central Training Area's Combat Town. The training consisted of instruction on MOUT tactics, followed by live-fire combat scenarios with SESAMS, or special-effect small arms marking system rounds. The rounds, fired out of a special receiver for M-16 rifles and the M-4 carbine, leave a bright, washable liquid on the impact area to display where a target was hit. The intent of the training was to expose the Marines to close quarters...

José Luis Cano was back at work driving his taxicab this week after surviving a kidnapping that started in San Diego and ended when he escaped the same day from a Tijuana house where he was being held. “It's difficult to describe how I feel,” he said. “I felt powerless, I felt fearful, and when I was in the house I focused on observing and listening to everything so I could get away.” Two men were arrested after Cano escaped and reported the crime to Mexican authorities. It's been a particularly busy week for kidnapping investigators on both sides of...

I read today that the Army is now going to hand out the new "Combat Action" Badge. It was designed similarly to the Combat Infantryman's Badge. The Combat Infantryman's Badge has a musket with a wreath around it. The Combat Action Badge has a similar wreath, but it has a bayonet and a hand grenade in place of the musket. The Army is apparently still trying to hammer out the exact criteria for the new badge. Here is my recommendation: nobody. This kind of reminds me of the Army's decision to make the black beret part of our uniform. It...

Send in the clowns. Here come the clowns. Yeah, the four-day Democratic Party convention will begin at Boston's FleetCenter on July 26, 2004. Oh wait, it's supposed to be a serious event, I guess. Perhaps that's why they imported those hundreds of extra hookers and the Boston Police have instructions to allow them to sell their wares unimpeded. But, darn, it's hard to take this convention seriously when the lead speakers remind me of a Bart Simpson quote: "Didn't do it. Didn't see me do it. Can't prove anything." To start off the show, they've got Hillary introducing Bill Clinton....

The party of the people wants to rip off Boston cabdrivers. BY Sunday, 12:01 a.m. EDT With John Kerry's fund-raising going so well, you'd think the Democratic National Committee wouldn't need to hustle Boston cabbies for a cheap ride--or illegal campaign contributions. But that's pretty much the effect of the DNC's misguided plan to provide subsidized cab rides for delegates at their Boston convention. At issue are the taxi vouchers the DNC wants to give to delegates arriving at Boston's Logan Airport. Under the DNC's proposal, taxi drivers would be required to accept the vouchers, worth $12 per passenger, in...

As Boston police hackney officials and Democratic National Convention hosts prepare to meet cabbies tomorrow to work out a discount voucher plan, one irate driver is exploring a Federal Election Commission complaint. Cab driver Bill Ford, an independent driver who says he's voted for more Democrats than Republicans, objects to what he considers a forced donation to the Democratic Party. The plan now being discussed would require cabbies working the airport to accept discount vouchers and multiple riders. Estimates on the value of the vouchers have been placed at $10 or more, but cabbies said compared to their regular multiple-rider...

A livery driver with a mysterious personal life was seriously wounded yesterday in Queens, becoming the first livery hack shot on the job in more than a year. Police have neither suspect nor motive in the 2:30 a.m. wounding of Michael Goldberg, 36, at 253rd St. and 147th Drive, in Rosedale. But the incident was even more puzzling to his wife, who said she had believed Goldberg was in Kuwait with his parents. Kate Bontoyan, 52, rushed to her husband's side in the intensive care unit at Mary Immaculate Hospital, where he communicated by writing notes. She said he went...
