A prominent Dutch journalist known for investigating the criminal underworld has been shot and seriously wounded on a street in central Amsterdam. Peter R de Vries, 64, was shot minutes after leaving a TV studio, where he had appeared on a chat show.

Clackamas County sheriff’s deputies have arrested a 24-year-old man who they say doused a customer with gasoline at Denny’s Wednesday night and then lit him on fire. Dougherty County School Police are investigating a complaint of excessive force against a sixth grade girl arrested for protesting having her picture taken. Her father shows scratches on 11-year-old Treneashe Graddy's neck and back. She says she was thrown to the ground and arrested at Southside Middle School yesterday. When school officials tried to take her picture for school identification, she refused because her hair was not fixed. The girl was charged with disorderly conduct, obstruction of an officer, and disrupting school.

Firefighters from nearly a dozen departments are battling several large grassfires that are endangering several homes near Bowie in Montague County. Eight to ten fires have been reported in the area, and appear to be fueled by the strong winds.

DALLAS — An attempted home invasion ended with what police called an all-out gun battle early Wednesday in a North Dallas residential neighborhood. The homeowner had a gun and opened fire on the suspects. He pursued them as they fled, hitting at least two of them, police said. One was found dead in an SUV several blocks away from the crime scene. Another was taken to Baylor University Medical Center in very critical condition.
