I would love to see a line-item budget on this school system to see where the money actually went. How many unneeded administrators? How many wasted ‘pilot programs?” how much spent educating the non-mainstream students?

Betting there is a whole lot wasted throughout the entire system.

My school system has a dress policy. Teachers are NOT expected to enforce it. We are asked to send the students to the office and let the administration deal with it. I am there to teach; I don’t have time to discuss the intricate policies of dress code.

Isn’t Congress still covered by CRCS? And there are many employees still in the system on CRCS - true, none hired after a date certain.

Govt employees on CRCS do not pay social security taxes. BTW, that includes all members of Congress

My girls didn’t watch many TV shows that other kids watched, nor did they watch R movies, listen to songs with suggestive lyrics, or read trashy novels.

Nor did they participate in any type of ‘sex education’ at school.

The shirt is fairly tame, I agree, it’s just that it wouldn’t have lived in my house — maybe yours, which is not my concern.

I’m not a big fan of that shirt. IMO it IS offensive and neither of my kids would have been allowed to own and/or wear it.

Question for those who might know.

In my county Head Start *IS NOT* run by the local school system. It is a gov't entity on its own, operated with no oversight by the public schools. In the case of my county, this is not good because the teachers for the Head Start are not required to be teachers - in fact some of the very parents of the 'at risk' kids are the assistants and teachers. Only the Lead teacher of Head Start is required to have an undergrad degree.

Is this unique to my county or is it the same elsewhere?

I went through a very strict vegan phase. To prevent any accidental consumption of meat products, I carried my own food everywhere. it was important to me that I not consume certain foods. Had I accidently eaten meat, I'm sure whoever gave it to me would apologize, but the damage would have been done

Lotta good thoughts in that article. And it does indeed echo what I’ve thought for ages - the community, not just the teachers, need to be involved. I think people in the homeschooling community have great ideas about curriculum and teaching methods and I wish they would share at their local school level and insist that they school board use sounder based books, etc.

I kinda like this.....Instead of worrying about after school stuff, let teachers concentrate on TEACHING. If this type of club doesn’t mesh with the values of the community, why should we have the tyranny of the minority?

This is an excellent example of how conservative parents need to work together to protect kids. ALL parents, not just home schooling ones, need to contact the school board to demand this be dropped.

There is a fascinating book called "This is Paradise!" written by escapees from North Korea. The people there are 100% indoctrinated that they really do live in Paradise and that things are ever so much worse outside of Paradise.

One of the examples of how things are worse elsewhere is that in America we DO eat our young. So while they are eating grass, it's worse here.

So incredibly sad that there is so little help for these people. They are prisoners and they don't even know it.

I don't know this for sure but is it not also true that if and when a child is diagnosed with a disability, that child becomes eligible for monthly checks from Uncle Sugar---either SSI or SS Disability?

Yes and no......the disablity has to be life-limiting, medically based, and approved by SS. While the schools can diagnose a learning disability, they cannot diagnose a medical disability - that's for doctors.

That being said, there are whole sections of the country where the doctors and social workers seem to be on some odd sort of wavelength in that whole communities are getting "crazy checks' from SS - and in some cases these are for documented cases of ADHD. There was an article I read recently, that if I can find it I'll send it by private message, about a family where the social workers were encouraging the parents to NOT send the children to school because it would jeopardize the SSI checks if the kids were successful. They were being told to homeschool in some way - via internet, mail order, whatever means necessary.

That's fraud any way you look at it. In this case, it's the doctors playing into this fraud, along with the social workers, to permantly hobble kids and keep them from getting any kind of life skill

Would it surprise you if I told you I found out this morning that the residential center he would like her to be placed at just so happens to have HIS name on the advisory board? Conflict of interest? Nah...can't be. No matter, it looks like we can provide services in a more efficient way.

When it comes to emotional services, there is some wiggle room to have the insurance companies kick in, however in the cases of the autistic, profoundly intellectually impaired, and significantly (read violently) emotionally disturbed, the schools typically foot the bill, until the year in which the child turns 22, because they have a right to an education. This is a part of IDEA - a law re-instated by every Congress and every president since 1977. No one has stood up against the outright tyranny. Of course, it would cut off a lot of revenue to the lawyers, can't have that!

For a child to cost $250K a year, there are numerous issues - mental, physical, and emotional, always with the potential of violence, whether intended or not. These three kids were born with significant impairments due to a short gestation. Nothing that the parents did wrong (or at least it doesn't appear that way, who knows truly) it just happened.

Still, even in the public school setting, the amount to school a typical kid isn't more than 7k or so a child. As long as they aren't going to Europe on the county's dime!

One of the reasons that the cost-per-student gets inflated is due to the special populations that schools are required to pay for. For instance, I'm writing an educational plan for a student whose doctor wants her placed in an institution for continuing depression. He is fighting tooth and nail to get the schools to pay for it, rather than the family's insurance. The cost will be about $300K... a year...for one student. I wrote another plan last year for a set of triplets who are all in an institution, and have been for years, due to severe MR issues - the county spends about 250k on each of them. And will until the year in which they turn 22.

Put a few of those into any system and the average cost increases to levels that leave people scratching their heads with "Wait...how can possibly cost $10k per student in a classroom?"

In the case of your wife's school, and any school really, it doesn't cost more than about 5k per student - but some students cost way, way more than 5k
