According to several reports in the Arabic media, prominent Muslim clerics have begun to call for the demolition of Egypt's Great Pyramids—or, in the words of Saudi Sheikh Ali bin Said al-Rabi'i, those "symbols of paganism," which Egypt's Salafi party has long planned to cover with wax. Most recently, Bahrain's "Sheikh of Sunni Sheikhs" and President of National Unity, Abd al-Latif al-Mahmoud, called on Egypt's new president, Muhammad Morsi, to "destroy the Pyramids and accomplish what Amr bin al-As could not." Has the sun finally set for Egypt's Great Pyramids? This is a reference to the Muslim Prophet Muhammad's companion,...

ALICE — There are about 325 supercentenarians in the country and 79th District Attorney Armando Barrera finds it hard to believe 18 of them voted in the Brooks County primary in May. In a petition to contest the election filed Friday, Barrera lists 18 voters who were all born on either Jan. 1, 1900, or Jan. 1, 1901, making each of them more than 110 years old. “Can you believe it?” Barrera said. “Maybe they’ve found the fountain of youth.” Armando and Homero Cruz are two men listed in the petition. According to Barrera, the two were both born on...

CORPUS CHRISTI — Information that a man wanted for murder was hiding in a Corpus Christi home led to a raid and the arrest of four people on felony drug and weapon charges. U.S. Marshals and Corpus Christi police’s SWAT team executed a search warrant on Monday at Sue Farenthold’s home in the 5000 block of Cape Romain Drive. Farenthold, the sister of U.S. Rep. Blake Farenthold, R-Corpus Christi, and three men were arrested. An informant told police that Jose Alfredo Moreno, 29, was hiding in the home, according to an affidavit for the search warrant. Moreno is wanted in...

Police in Texas raided the home of Rep. Blake Farenthold’s sister, a local television station reported Monday. KRIS TV reported that a SWAT team searched her Corpus Christi home, looking for drugs and weapons. The police department did not immediately comment because officers were still in the field, an officer told POLITICO. “I am saddened to learn the terrible news of the situation unfolding around my sister,” Farenthold said in a statement, released by his Congressional office. “Tragedy has occurred in my family in the past, and I am saddened it has happened again. I trust that law enforcement officials...

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Many entrenched members of the Texas congressional delegation overcame reshuffled political boundaries to win their primaries, but those new maps had nothing to do with how a guitar-playing, twice-arrested former city councilman who advocates legalizing marijuana ousted a powerful Democrat in a doozy of an election-night stunner. Beto O'Rourke kept a low profile Wednesday after defeating U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes in the El Paso district. The former House Intelligence chairman, meanwhile, returned to Washington after being denied even a runoff despite an endorsement from President Barack Obama and a campaign stop from former President Bill...

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A citizen with a gun stopped a knife wielding man as he began stabbing people Thursday evening at the downtown Salt Lake City Smith's store. Police say the suspect purchased a knife inside the store and then turned it into a weapon. Smith's employee Dorothy Espinoza says, "He pulled it out and stood outside the Smiths in the foyer. And just started stabbing people and yelling you killed my people. You killed my people." Espinoza says, the knife wielding man seriously injured two people. "There is blood all over. Munisteri explained that he has always been a supporter of Winner Take All. [Winner Take All – WTA -- means that all 152 Texas Republican delegates would be awarded to the winner of the Texas Republican primary; proportional means that the number of delegates would be awarded proportionally among the various candidates.] Munisteri said that Texas has the second most Republican delegates (second to California), more than 3 X the number from Florida, and 6 X more than the number from South Carolina. He believes if Texas moves to WTA that our state will stop being ignored as inconsequential and...

DEL RIO — A Texas man caught trying to smuggle baby parrots back from Mexico by putting the birds in his pants has been fined more than $2,600. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said Thursday that agents in Del Rio also confiscated 56 blades that are used for cockfighting. Authorities said the 33-year-old man is from the West Texas town of Comanche but did not release his name. Birds cannot be brought across the border due to concerns of spreading disease. The small, green parrots were found Sunday in the man's pockets and in his backpack.

China’s opposition to the European Union’s Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS), has prevented Lufthansa (LH) from obtaining rights to operate an Airbus A380 to Shanghai, LH chairman and CEO Christoph Franz said. “The EU ETS is further increasing the already distorted level playing. We [the European airline industry] cannot accept retaliatory measures against the EU ETS in whatever form, landing rights or other. Some days ago, Lufthansa once again did not get the authorization to use an A380 to Shanghai,” Franz told the European Aviation Club in Brussels Tuesday. “Listening and nodding is not enough,” he warned European regulators. “We...

Vladimir Putin has declared victory in Russia's presidential elections, returning for a third term after spending the last four years as the country's PM. Exit polls and preliminary results gave him about 60% of the vote. Mr Putin told supporters at a rally in central Moscow they had won in an open and honest battle. But opposition groups have reported widespread fraud, with many people said to have voted more than once. ............. "I promised you we would win, and we won," he said, with tears in his eyes. "Glory to Russia!" "We have won in an open and honest...

Even when I agree with Rick Santorum, listening to him argue the point almost makes me change my mind. I also wonder why he's running for president, rather than governor, when the issues closest to his heart are family-oriented matters about which the federal government can, and should, do very little. It's strange that Santorum doesn't seem to understand the crucial state-federal divide bequeathed to us by the framers of our Constitution, inasmuch as it is precisely that difference that underlies his own point that states could ban contraception. Of course they can. States could outlaw purple hats or Gummi...

CORPUS CHRISTI — Littering the landscape with plastic shopping bags is indeed a problem. The proposed solution — banning them — doesn't address the problem at its source, which is the people doing the littering. A bag ban only removes bags from their arsenal, much like a ban on so-called "assault" rifles can change the cosmetics of a law-abiding gun owner's home arsenal. For an inanimate object, the plastic bag, like the assault rifle, has attained quite a reputation for villainy. Truth is, its penchant for premeditated environmental depredation is overblown. Lift an empty one to appreciate the tininess of...
