EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Many entrenched members of the Texas congressional delegation overcame reshuffled political boundaries to win their primaries, but those new maps had nothing to do with how a guitar-playing, twice-arrested former city councilman who advocates legalizing marijuana ousted a powerful Democrat in a doozy of an election-night stunner.

Beto O'Rourke kept a low profile Wednesday after defeating U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes in the El Paso district. The former House Intelligence chairman, meanwhile, returned to Washington after being denied even a runoff despite an endorsement from President Barack Obama and a campaign stop from former President Bill Clinton.

On Wednesday afternoon, Reyes released a statement congratulating O'Rourke on the victory and pledging to work with him to ensure a smooth transition.

"To all El Pasoans, I express my deep appreciation for the privilege of representing you for the past 15 years," Reyes said. "Your entrustment of this office to me has been a great honor."

..................

A super PAC called the Campaign for Primary Accountability spent $240,000 on ads that linked Reyes to a controversial contract awarded to a company that gave him campaign contributions and hired his children, spokesman for the super PAC Curtis Ellis said.

“Despite” must be journolese for “because of.”

Reverse Midas touch strikes again. This is my home district and I know a lot of republicans crossed over. This will be a shoo in for O’Rourke...

According to another article, the same super PAC that funded the anti-Reyes campaign is funding a campaign against Charles Rangel.

The Campaign for Primary Accountability, which favors term limits on political officeholders, already had managed to unseat Illinois Republican lawmaker Adam Kinzinger and it contributed to the defeat of Ohio Republican legislator Jean Schmidt.

The group has made clear that its next target will be Democratic New York Congressman Charles Rangel.

The Super PACs, groups created as a result of several rulings in 2010, individuals, unions and companies may make unlimited contributions to political campaigns and their funds may be spent to help ensure the victory or defeat of a federal candidate.

Although by law Super PACs cannot directly coordinate their activities with a candidate, in practice they wind up being an extension of the campaign, activists claim.

Happy to see Beto kick this old, corrupt codger out. Reyes is a perfect example of the need for term limits. After fifteen years, he was way past due.

It would help if we would start organizing again with protests like in 2009

"U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes...El Paso... The former House Intelligence chairman, meanwhile, returned to Washington after being denied even a runoff despite an endorsement from President Barack Obama and a campaign stop from former President Bill Clinton."

Ouch. I predict at least three Butthurt Reports, very soon. Ouch...

This November is going to be an utter train wreck for the donks. Seriously. Even their base is voting against their most powerful members.

And they are stirring up violence as a fall back position. See Holder’s and Farakan’s recent statements. Thing is, that will be even more of a train wreck for them.

They’re delusional, and they’re about to meet reality. That’s never pretty for those who live in fantasy land...

Where good people do right, we are often rewarded. There is movement for good, after decades of sleeping and resting on our laurels.

Thanks be to God for the internet where TEA flows 24/7.

Wasn’t Reyes basically a representative of Mexico? Is this new guy any better?

As true as this may be, there is one potential unintended consequence: it probably opens the door for Alcee Hastings (corrupt, impeached for bribery, former Federal Judge and all-around race-baiting poverty pimp who is now a Congressman) to ascend to the top Dem spot on the House Intel Committee. Silvestre was elevated into the position specifically to keep Hastings out of it.
