He first joined the legislature back in 1980, now more than 30 years later democratic House Speaker Billy McCoy is putting down the gavel for good and retiring. It's a move some lawmakers say they expected. "He sent some signals that he was thinking about that and I had a number of conversations with him where he said he has not made up his mind," said Rep. Cecil Brown (D-Jackson). "He won under current districts by one vote. He became speaker by one vote," said Rep. Mark Baker, (R-Brandon). My 16 year old spotted this ugly spider residing between the house and grill this evening. The locale is Columbus, MS (northeast part of the state) Can anybody identify what kind of spider it is? This bugger was about 3 inches in length and 2 inches wide counting the legs. The body was about 3/4 inch long and about 3/8 inch wide. FYI: It is now a good spider. Smushed into a little pile of goo. http://myweb.cableone.net/jcdillon/images/Spider2%209-5-07.jpg

California corrections officials have begun sending hundreds of foreign national inmates against their will to a private prison in Mississippi as part of a stepped-up, out-of-state transfer plan. The first two flights of prisoners to the Tallahatchie County Detention Facility in Tutwiler, Miss., have taken place without incident, officials said, in spite of fears expressed by the California correctional officers union that the forced transfers would be met with inmate violence. A UA freshman and Iraq war veteran was shot dead Friday night after a car accident after leaving the Ying Yang Twins' Homecoming concert, police said. The death is Tuscaloosa's seventh homicide this month following a rash of shootings in recent weeks. Conrad Hollis, 21, was a passenger in a maroon Nissan Pathfinder that rear-ended an unidentified vehicle carrying a man and a woman. My son, a freshman in Mississippi public school, was given a book by another student today. The book is titled "The Truth For Youth". It is distributed by Revival Fires International, Tim Todd Ministries, out of West Monroe, LA. The book is made up of cartoon like "lessons" about such subjects as sex, pornography, homosexuality, aborthion, witchcraft, drugs, and more, and includes the text of the New Testament. The back page and back cover discuss the legal ramifications of distributing the books in schools. Not having previously heard of this group before, I am soliciting opinion from the most learned group...

We have been receiving numerous calls from (866) 325-2373 every day. When we answer, the caller hangs up. When we call back, the call is answered by an automated attendant. The company is not identified, all the operators are busy, and you have to leave a message. We have left a message several times telling them to take us off their call list. Our number is on the National No Call List and has been since the first day we could register. We have filed a complaint on the No Call website. Are other FReepers receiving these calls? I have...

Henry “Thumper” Yandle is helping organize a convoy scheduled to leave Meehan Junction Saturday morning to attend a memorial service in Laurel for Sgt. 1st Class Clarence McSwain. Yandle, and those traveling with him, will not only be going to pay their respects to McSwain’s family, they will try to shield the family from protesters who are also planning to arrive. “We basically stand between them and the family,” Yandle said. “We don’t want anybody coming who wants to cause trouble. We don’t confront these people. We let the authorities deal with that.” The fringe group planning to “picket” McSwain’s...

Editor: Democrats Prevailing I see that our Lt. Gov. Amy Tuck is getting fed up with our Bush-like Haley Barbour because of differences in their views on how to spend our taxes. First, she should have known that being a lobbyist for the big tobacco companies, that Barbour would do anything he can that would be beneficial to them, but Amy Tuck, being peeved off at Barbour, said she is going back to the Democratic Party which made me very angry. I wonder where she gets the audacity to think the Democratic Party would even want to have her back....

O.K. I'll make an attempt to tell what's going on down here right now. It's hard to do for several reasons. First, because there is so much , it's hard to talk about. Let's try to focus on the positive. You're right to be sick about New Orleans. They've turned into a bunch of animals over there. The idiots are shooting at the people who are trying to help them???? I think for the most part it's due to the frustration caused by the lack of response by their State Government....I mean, an SOS call? Give me a break. Everybody...
