I am posting this week-old message from GOA because I called Alexander's office yesterday. I called to review the interminable list of frightening bills being considered by the Senate, and added that I was VERY disappointed with Alexander's votes on the "porkulus" bill AND the confirmation of Harold Koh. The staffer immediately offered EXACTLY the PREVARICATION described below. Unfortunately, I fell for it then - UNTIL I recalled this message, and was able to find it. Now I will call back Monday to let them know that trust is hard won, and easily lost. ************************************** Eight Republicans Help Confirm a...

The UN needs a new home, and the barely-existing island nation of Nauru needs something to do besides selling potash for fertilizer - they have no fresh water, and no agriculture. So I think that it would be the PERFECT new home for the UN. Do you think that if we build it - there - they will GO?

I am responding to your Enewsletter Volume 5, Issue 7. I find it remarkable - and sad - that you would consider your position on the war in Iraq to make any sense at all. As a veteran who has served at more military posts than I can remember, I recall one constant feature of every such location. Somewhere on the base - frequently, in the mess hall - was a prominent posting of the MILITARY chain of command, extending from the President down to the commanding officer of the location. It included the position, rank, and NAME of the...

Although these diagrams are a couple of years old, they do clarify the gross and net energy flows of the US economy, and clearly show the overall efficiency of that consumption in a way that some of you might find informative and useful. https://eed.llnl.gov/flow/02flow.php

Developed by Pfizer, pregabalin, marketed under the brand name Lyrica, is a 3-substituted analogue of gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) and a compound related to Pfizer's hugely successful antiepileptic drug gabapentin (Neurontin). In July 2004, Pfizer secured Europe-wide approval for Lyrica (pregabalin) for use in the management of peripheral neuropathic pain as well as an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial epileptic seizures. Subsequently in December 2004 the company gained FDA approval for use of Lyrica (pregabalin) in neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy and postherpetic neuralgia; making it the first FDA-approved treatment for both of these neuropathic pain...

The high court should stop its disingenuous sidestep of the church-state debate. The U.S. Supreme Court recently agreed to hear a pair of cases testing the constitutionality of displays of the Ten Commandments on government property. The Court finally agreed to reconcile conflicting lower rulings-concerning the display of a six-foot monument on the grounds of the Texas State Capitol in one case, and another involving framed copies of the commandments on Kentucky courthouse walls. The two cases have legitimate differences: The Texas display is part of a collection, the Kentucky "collection" sprung up to protect the display. The Texas monument...

The trumpeted sexual harassment suit against Gov. James McGreevey by former aide Golan Cipel would no doubt be the most sensational employment case in state history. The threat alone led the governor to resign and acknowledge that he is gay. So who did Cipel, identified by McGreevey aides as the man with whom the governor had a consensual, adulterous affair, turn to as his lawyer? (snip) (Allen) Lowy has no visible labor and employment experience, is not admitted in New Jersey and, according to a close friend and colleague, is not a litigator. Lowy has brought on co-counsel, but that...

The solar constant isn't constant. The sun is a variable star. The vast majority of climate scientists in the world seriously and objectively studies what it is that influences global climate changes. We don't hear as much from them in the media as we do from the far smaller but also far more vocal minority of climate scientists who make a living by publicizing alarmist and often outrageous claims about man's detrimental influence on the global climate. Armed with the very real evidence of the global cooling trend during the first half of the 20th century, climate alarmists claimed in...

The Bombshell in the Clarence Thomas Biography Jonathan Ringel Fulton County Daily Report A bombshell is buried deep within "Judging Thomas," Ken Foskett's engaging biography of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. It has nothing to do with Anita Hill's sexual harassment claims that nearly sank Thomas' 1991 nomination, although Foskett's conclusions about that episode are bound to spark arguments. Nor does it deal with the affirmative action policies Thomas detests, even though Foskett shows how the justice was a beneficiary of them in high school, college, law school and – reluctantly -- early in his career. It's a comment...

I can't do it, but I know somebody out there could put Berger's face on that infamous Al Gore Rolling Stone cover with the enhanced "package." Perhaps with a little enhancement to the enhancement, if it works. And then, of course, captions would be needed....

A few weeks ago I received a faint-hearted, weak response to my request for support for Constitutional protection of marriage, in the face of a concerted assault on the institution of marriage by the courts. I quote an excerpt: There are several proposals before Congress that would begin the process of amending the Constitution to prohibit same-sex marriage. I am not persuaded that amending the Constitution is necessary because Tennessee already defines marriage as between a man and a woman, and as I said before, federal law makes clear our state's right to enforce that definition. I'm grateful you took...

Again today, I noticed a couple of talking heads discussing the election in terms of the "right track" or "wrong track" poll question, as if this single question were the sole indicator of the President's re-election prospects. In the past I think this might have been true. But times have changed, as well as circumstances, to the point that I now believe that this correlation was never more than mere coincidence. Coincidence is simply two (or more) events or circumtances occurring close enough together that they appear to be associated in a non-random way. These occur frequently enough to keep...

I just made a mental connection between two disconnected events. I saw Gibson's epic presentation on it's first day of release, and still cannot not put the experience out of mind. Of course, Jesus is at the center, but I also found the images Satan striking and disturbing. Then the news of the release of deceased supreme court justice Harry Blackmun's papers, memos, and taped interviews hit all of the networks. Of course, Blackmun, as author of the most lethal revision of the Constitution in its history via the Roe v. Wade decision, is an absolute darling of the conventional...

The threat of a gun set off a chain of events that led to the death of a soon-to-be-born infant and murder charges against the alleged robber, police said Tuesday. Rhonda Jordan, 22, was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder in perpetration of an aggravated robbery. Her attempt to rob the infant's mother led to the death the next day of the nearly full-term infant, police said. Police say Jordan accosted the child's mother, Christian Harris, 20, with a handgun last Wednesday at Alcy and Elvis Presley Boulevard in Memphis, claiming Harris owed her $1,000. Harris and another woman with her...

Not too much to add to the title, I just thought that it was good enough in itself to be worth posting.

FLORIDA Gov. Jeb Bush and the state's legislature have unconscionably meddled in the case of a severely brain-damaged woman, who has been in a hopeless vegetative state for 13 years, whose husband had finally won the right for her to die peacefully. The decision to remove life support is difficult, but there are medical and legal reviews to ensure it also is proper. The case of Terri Schiavo, 39, had passed all those reviews, including judicial scrutiny that reached the Florida Supreme Court twice and the U.S. Supreme Court once. Considered medical opinion has ruled out any hope of recovery....

Their reporter who presents news about the media was discussing talk radio with the usual parade of liberal know-nothings. After acknowledging that Limbaugh had created the genre, and showing excerpts that were too short to convey any depth from Savage and Hannity, he let Al Franken have a few free shots at conservatives, and then announced that Rush Limbaugh's show would be on "hiatus" for the next month. Substitute hosting is decidedly NOT hiatus, of course, and I will not be misled, but the typical PBS listener might be.

It's time once again to consider the candidates for the 2003 Stella Awards. The Stella's are named after 81-year-old Stella Liebeck who spilled coffee on herself and successfully sued McDonalds. That case inspired the Stella Awards for the most uniquely successful lawsuits in the United States for last year. Joint awards should be given to the plaintiff attorneys and the flaming idiots on the juries who awarded anything at all to these morons--who deserved NOTHING!!!! The following are this year's candidates: Kathleen Robertson of Austin, Texas, was awarded $780,000 by a jury of her peers after breaking her ankle tripping...

A friend has said much worse things about President Bush and his foreign policy than the lead singer of the Dixie Chicks has. It's worth noting that he might have to forfeit some of his income if he had her platform. This is only the first draft of history, to be seasoned with perspective by skilled hands in the rewrite department. But Natalie Maines's experience is useful. First draft writers interested in the health of the First Amendment go where they need to go while homeland security is paramount and patriotism flourishes. Right-wing radio fanatics dug into Maines like Guatamalan...
