NEW YORK (WABC) -- Firefighters are battling a six-alarm fire in the Breezy Point section of the Rockaway peninsula in Queens. Officials say the fire was reported at about 11 p.m. Monday and involves about 50 houses situated in a flooded Zone A area. A fire department spokesman says nearly 200 firefighters are currently at the scene. He says two people have suffered minor injuries. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Tim Geithner, one of President Barack Obama’s closest economic advisers, has no intention on staying on as Treasury secretary if Obama wins a second term. Geithner, who was one of the chief architects of the government’s response to the financial crisis, told Bloomberg Television he’s “pretty confident” Obama won’t ask him to stay on. “I’m confident he’ll be president. But I’m also confident he’s going to have the privilege of having another secretary of the Treasury,” Geithner said. A strong storm system that produced several suspected tornadoes hit the Southeast on Wednesday, damaging dozens of homes and buildings. At least 15 people were injured in Mississippi. Suspected tornadoes were reported in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Four homes were damaged in western Alabama, about 60 miles southwest of Tuscaloosa. It was the worst bout of weather for that state since about 250 people were killed during a tornado outbreak in April. < SNIP >

Employees and shoppers are being allowed back into the Rib Mountain Wal-mart after a bomb scare. The Marathon County Sheriff's Department tells NewsChannel 7 that the incident happened shortly before 4 p.m. After everyone was evacuated, the Marathon/Oneida County Bomb Squad swept the building.
